handlebars (newbie question #1)

so ive been looking to customize my dog (before ive even recieved it) and im curious about handlebars. my bikes a 2008 pitbull. ive seen quite a few dragbars i like but from what i understand big dog controls and grips are a very akward size (1 1/8inch i think?). so that means i have to get bars custom made in order to use the stock controls and grips, or i can buy some bars for a harley but i have to buy new grips and controls (standard 1inch)?

is my theory right or could i conceiveably still use the stock stuff on aftermarket bars that have a 1inch area for grips and controls?

The BDM is set up with a low voltage system to the controls so you can't use harley or other style controls on the bike. You'll get more answers though:D

Depends on what you're after. You want new bars or new controls? You can have new bars (I would get them custom made like Moespeeds did). Use your stock proprietary controls though. Personally, I wouldn't mess with the electrical system on your new Dog.

Luckeydog,

I have a '07 K 9 and wanted higher bars, look for my post somewhere here on the forum - with pictures.
Big Dog recommended 06 bars from the Mutt (3.5" higher, 1" more forward).
It is now perfect for me. No other changes necessary - electric cables are just long enough, same for clutch and brake line. BDM installed all the wires in the bars before they send it, so it was a very easy installation. Very happy with it and no electrical issues.......:) :) :) :)

It depends on how much aggravation you are willing to go through. You can have bars made the same size as BD bars, I think it's 1 1/4". Or you could get 1" bars and have sleeves machined to take up the difference. Unless you go with a similar rise and pullback, you may need to extend your wires which would be a hassle. Bottom line is unless you goto another set of BD bars, it's going to be a pain in the ass.

you can put the stock controls back on as long as you get 1.25 bars. put a sleeve in the throttle grip. on the clutch side you will need to fill the 1/8 gap with something. and new cables if needed. the switches are tricky I just did this on a 04 mastiff. check it out.

I wish I had more money.
Well lets see it Mr. No Intro.

I cut my original bars where the controls are and lug welded them into a Carlini handle bar. The Carlini bar was also cut to keep the original dimensions.
I rechromed the Carlini drag bar after the mod.

i had some sleeves made from aluminum by a friend.this way you can use any bars you want and still use your bd controls.

Do you have pics of your bars? Thinking of doing the exact same thing...I've got an 08 pitbull with dragbars, looking at Carlini's 14" panty droppers, I love the look of them. Hope they'll be comfortable!

I couldn't imagine 14" apes would be comfortable at all, you'd be laying on the tank to reach far enough forward.
