Here are the pages from the 05 Service Manual on the Starter System. This may help all in servicing the starter in your bike.
This should be the same for all RSD starter systems.

Went to start mine today, with no luck. I'll check the battery but suspect the selonoid after reading this. Thanks Ray good timing on your part!

Hey Raywood,
I believe the pages you posted would be of benefit to me, but I do not see anything, nor a link to anywhere. Please repost them for me. Thank you. :2thumbs:
My story:
I was idling at a long light, the bike was very warm. I elected to shut her down and wait to for the light to change. When I turned the key (everything acted correctly), when I pressed the button the tach lights ran again (like a test) and then the bike was completely dead. I pushed it off the road and looked under the set for anything. I checked the usual stuff that I could having no tools with me; all looked normal. I pushed the bike about 1/4 mile, took a rest and turned the key. The lights ran like normal and stayed on, until I pressed the starter button. All electrical equipment died. I pushed the bike about another 1/4 mile and when I got home I tried the key again. Again it lit up and seemed ready for use. I pressed the starter button and again everything went black. I heard one click sound coming from the starter area just as I pressed the starter button. (During the push home, I had turned the key a couple of times and there was no power at all.)
I know its not the battery as its about 1yr old and it has showed absolutely no hesitation to fire the motor. My Harley friend thinks it may be a loose wire, but I fail to see why it would have contact until the button is pressed, and why it would make a clicking sound. Im not entirely verse on V motors or the electrical side of vehicles; Im more of a mechanical kind of guy. Any advise you can offer me? Thank you.

My 2007 just clicked when I hit the starter and the battery was bad. Ok, replaced the battery hit the started and clunk, starter motor shaft snapped. I don't recall anyone on the forum having a broken starter .. guess I am the first. Replaced started and all is well! :)

What I can't figure out is why the 2005 manual is so in depth and the 2006 isn't. There is all of 1/2 a page in my manual that talks about the starter. No images or anything about removal and installation.

Hey all,
Thank you for the replies. Ill check the battery but I fail to see how it could be that.

I spoke to Tampa BDM and was told to load test the battery, which I did. The battery is only 15 months old, so I expected it to be good. The test results were excellent: 12.9v, 354cca, 270cca rated, 76 degrees. All cells were good.

While on the phone with Tampa, I asked if a loose ignition (key can be slid out about 1/4 inch after turned) might be the culprit. He said it could be that or the ECH module. Is there a way to test either item? Any advice is appreciated.

About three weeks ago I got the 10,000 mile service done and a .600 cam put in. When I picked it up the clutch was dragging again, so I figured they over-filled the primary again. Turns out that this time a single tooth off the starter pinion gear broke off, the piece got stuck behind the pressure plate, and wouldn't let the clutch disengage.
Got the piece out, refilled the primary, and everything is perfect again.
I still have to get another gear, or maybe a whole new starter might be easier.
As a side note, the bike is starting easier with the .600 cam than it did with the stock one. Must have lowered the compression slightly with the extra lift & duration....:)

What do you think of the 600 cam? can you tell much of a difference?

Yeah TCAL. Big difference! Big gain from about 2500 up, revs out clean, and the coolest part is it's running way smoother.
I had already re-jetted once before for a K&N filter. Then I had to ride it home 2 hrs from the shop, after the cam change, and it was running a bit lean again. I put in a 33 int & a 76 main and it made all the difference.:2thumbs:

Great help

I have an 06 k-9. Does the 05 manual have better service help and could i use it instead of an 06? I also am having a few starter problems, I put a new battery in as the old one was bad. After a few hours of stop and start the starter seems not to catch and spins then on about the third try it does perfect. Now the tacg sticks at 3000 rom then goes out. Love the bike, hate the problems. Any suggestions?:job:

Raywood,
I read about the car alternator shaft fitting our starters. I sent some emails to BDM Corporate, and also called a local starter shop. The local shop did have a new shaft and installed it in the starter for me for $63.50. I did the R&R on the V and she runs like a champ! Im very happy I didnt have to spend another few hundreds dollars for starter #11. The part number for the shaft is 028381-0040, and the number for the starter it comes from is 028000-7300. I had mine done at Victory Auto Electric and Air, Inc. at 4521 Sunbeam Rd in Jacksonville, FL. Phone number is 904-731-5065.

As for Sheldon Coleman...Im glad his greed led him to this business failure.

I hope the above info helps. Enjoy the ride.
