What Kind of Bolt Is This?

I need to get another bolt bit about 1/2" longer. It's for the air filter bracket that threads into the head. Is this like a self tapping bolt? Can I use just a regular one? I need a 3" chrome one thread is 1/4 20. Local stores don't have anything and can't find online. Any idea where I can check if I can't just use a regular bolt? Thanks

I can't see where you're from on this tablet, but I have had good luck at a home improvement store called Menards here in Indiana with finding replacement hardware.

It's not, it is the bolt that came with the D&M bracket kit for the D&M Spike

I'm in Arizona, I can look it up online but not sure what the proper name is for a bolt that is cut like that. Unless it's not needed, then I can order a basic button chrome bolt

the self tapping part of the bolt would only be needed the first time it was run into the hole. after that, a standard bolt is all you would need if it runs in all the way.

That groove is too long for a self tapping screw. Wonder if its for breathing or venting.?

that IS a possibility but it seems like that is not what it would be for since it would only vent to the inside and not allow gases to go anywhere. i don't remember ever seeing tapping threads going that far up on the shank of a bolt. does make a man scratch his head and say WTF?

Get a hold of S&S and ask them, that long of a bolt with a channel cut in, is special made for a reason.

I'll give D&M a call tomorrow and see what's up, it's the bolts in this kit..

Looks like all their kits use those bolts, wonder if it helps it not loosen up as easy?

Weird, wonder why DM uses it for all their air filter bracket kits. Guess I'm good to replace it with a standard bolt
