The original bolts wouldn't fit the new starter?

You may very well be correct Eric, however there is one thing that has me suspicious. The lug for positive cable was metric which makes me think it is a Chinese starter and therefore 10-32 would not work, I suggested to pickup a M5 - 0.8

You don't have a box of bolts laying around? Grab a 10-32 bolt and thread it in.

Oh crap, you guys are in Canada. Damn metric system.

HA, I know this because I just rebuilt my primary and I ordered new locking washers and ordered the wrong one. Had to go to HD to get a 1993 softail washer - 1/4" 1994 and above is 10-32.

The reason they went to 1/4-20 is because the smaller 10-32 breaks on the bigger starter motor combos.
You should get the correct shaft and bolt.

I guess for now the 10-32 will do until I rebuild the old starter with the 1/4-20
