bump for help!!!

allllllllllllllllllrighty.....same problem still going on after WP install. hooked the taillights up to volt meter, and with the brake levers NOT pushed, it is reading 6v. Should be at 0. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Just curious, what do the brake lights do when you press the brake pedal or pull the brake lever or has that been asked?

Nothing happens. As soon as I turn the key on, the brake lights come on, and they do not go away, however if i hit the turn signals, those work normal.

Sounds like you have a wire jacked up somewhere.

Did you perform all tests as stated previously. Disconnect front turn signals, connectors at brake light switches, front and rear etc:?

I have a very reliable, easy to work on & trouble shoot 1991 FXR that I will trade for your Big Dog. Just to save you the grief of dealing with these nusances.

Where are you reading the 6V (from what pin to what pin)?

If you disconnect J-3 is it still there?

Is it still there if you disconnect J-5?

Didn't think you'd go for the trade. :flag:

Hang in there.

I've got a WiresPlus upgrade coming for my 05' Chopper. Gremlins inhabited it's EHC.:nopity:

BILL - from what I am reading this WP thing is the way to go....this problem I had was going on right before I started the conversion.....

Guess I got some good EHC's for sale......
bike came with 3 of them.

It is from J3 back to the pins on the led board on the light that we are reading the 6v from.
Specifically what pins? According to the wiring diagram there shouldn't be any direct connection between the J-3 connector and the rear tail lights. The power to the lights comes from the EHC (or the WP), not directly from the front or rear brake switch.

Dennis

PS You didn't answer my other questions about what happens if you disconnec J-3 or J-5!!!

Here's something else to take a look at...

There's a three pin connector going to each tail light. On the tail light there's a red, green, and black wires. My question is, how are yours wired (meaning what color is going to what color).
They should be, according to the wiring diagram:
Right rear -
Pin 1 - the red from the light should be connected to a red from the bike.
Pin 2 - the green from the light should be connected to a brown from the bike.
Pin 3 - the black from the light should be connected to a black from the bike.
Left rear -
Pin 1 - the red from the light should be connected to a GREEN from the bike.
Pin 2 - the green from the light should be connected to a violet from the bike.
Pin 3 - the black from the light should be connected to a black from the bike.

It makes no sense to me that on the left rear they'd have a color combo like that! It would make it very easy to connect the green to green assuming it's correct but by doing that you'd have the brake and turn signal lights cross wired!

Just another thought...

Dennis

PS You could also disconnect J-4 and both rear lights then check continuity to see if they're wired correctly.

Thats weren I was going Dennis.Thats why I was asking what they do when he hits the brake pedal and lever.Seen it happen before. Also know of someone who thought the brake light was stuck on because he didnt know they were running lights also.Cut wires to the switches ,even had a shop look at it and couldnt figure that one out.:loony::roll:

Aaaahhhhhhh....welcome to the world of "Big Dog". Sorry about the half assed service, I ran into almost the exact situation down here in Delaware. Be patient in your own troubleshooting...just when you think it'll never get fixed you'll find it and the wind will again be in your face.

Alright here we go. After a looooong roundabout way of getting here per electrical engineer trying every other thing known to man, we have ruled the issue down to the first thing told to check and last thing actually checked......

Anyone know the HD model number for front brake switch on 2003 Chopper?
