I assume the starter has to come out but can't find any removal instructions anywhere. I have the 08 service manual from Franco on my computer but can't seem to find starter removal in it. Does anybody have removal instruction? Any ideas on what happened to my starter, or what ix needed to fix?

Oh shit! I really hope it´s not the same that happened to me.....

Remove the primary cover and see if its this: (I hope not) Curtis fixed mine.

The starter itself is not hard to take off, there are two bolts only.

You said the starter is spinning free, but not moving anything, right? first thing to do is check inside the primary and see if it broke like mine did.

If its that then yes you will have to take the starter off and send it to Curtis.

Not sure what bike you have (it doesn't show anymore in this new forum)... on my K9 I managed to take it out with only removing the right side battery cover so to get access to the two allen bolts that attach the starter to the primary.

1. Battery out
2. Starter wires out
3. find your way to reach to the two starter bolts

Depends on what bike you might need to make more room for you to reach in there, maybe exhaust will have to come off ....

I have An 06 K9 that broke the shaft. I had to take off the primary cover to get the broken piece of the starter. Took the pipes off to get to the starter bolts, I have big radius pipes. The side cover had to come off also. 2 allen head bolts that you need long extentions to get to for the starter.

don't talk yourself into a fit, it may seem a little daunting but in actuality, it is probably not as hard a job as you think it is. just take your time and pay attention to what you are doing. you can do it.

Unbolted the starter and pulled it back out of the primary as far as I could, the end is gone! Fuck now I have to take off the primary cover, I know it's not hard to do but my new primary oil (last year) and all the fucking around. Gives me a chance to adjust the chain and clutch. Now to get the starter out of there. Read on here somewhere that taking the battery box out works to get the starter up out of there. Is there a better way?

Yup, that's it.

And.... if I did it with shitty metric tools and a very few good ones........ for you it should be a breeze.... don't get carried away, I don't know of anyone who had to take the battery box out to reach the starter.... its two of us who are telling you the same thing. Exhaust (if on the way), R side battery cover and Primary cover.

Good Luck

My broken shaft looked just like your picture Franco. I would think unbolting the battery box to lift the starter out would be easier then taking off pipes or that front sproket cover. Maybe I am missing something easier.

Whatever you find easier for you.... unbolting the battery box also means unbolting EHC wires etc etc etc etc..... I think this path would just make it more complicated than it is.

I know its a PITA, but it needs to be done.

Pull the pipes, pull the clutch cover, pull the belt off the front pulley, pull the side cover, pull the starter.
You don't have to pull the belt but I find it much easier to pull the starter out and put it back in.
In your case pull the primary cover also.
You don't want to mess with the electrical if you have everything tidy and working nice.
Its way easier to put something back wrong with electrical than it is with mechanical.

Oh yeah, I forgot the clutch cover. I had to take that loose. Also, when you put it all back together, don't forget to put the GROUND WIRE back to the starter... it wont turn over without it and you end up having to take it halfway apart to hook it up.

I managed to do it with out touching the clutch cover..... a bit tight but with patience the starter will come out and go back in.... obviously yes, it will be easier if you take the cover out of the way.

Thanks guys, I will have it out today and get it to Curtis. Your right Curtis to not fuck with the electronics if it's working.
