Hmm..A Click and no start!!!

Glad I found this site yesterday. So I'm leaving the tattoo shop last night.. I jump on the Dog and try to start her up..Go to hit the button to fire her up and " CLICK" nothing.. Hit it a few more times and Click Click CLick each time.. Turn the key off, scratch my head and admire my new tattoo.. I turn the key back on, hit the start button and she fired up. I get home kill the motor and tried to start her up again. She fires right up...

What do you guys think.. starter on the blink?

I would check your starter and battery connections first.

I agree with tim. Also, be sure to let the speedo cycle, then hit the run, twist twist, start.

Tim.. shouldn't this be in just tech and not "how to"

You weren't touching the throttle during start up were you?

And I thought maybe I saw some people having problems with their ignition keys...

No, I was not touching the throttle. It acts like a loose connection but I don't know. I'm headed out to check all the battery connections and starter connections now.. will report back!

Sounds like a key switch to me. If you haven't seen it posted here before you shouldn't have any key rings on your ignition key. It adds stress to you switch.
I would turn the key on and wiggle the key in the switch and see if you loose power and check the wires behind the coil to make sure they are tight.

I know at on time I ues to get that clicking stuff, but I found it was that I had not had it on life support for a few weeks and it caused that battery to pretty much deplete itself. And like froggy I turned the key off and then on again and I ended up being able to start the bike again.

Once getting it back home it took roughly 4.5 hrs. to get fully charged.

Oh yeah, thanks Oscar for the reminder.

I just assume that everyone knows that they need to have their dogs on a "Battery Tender"! :D

That's one thing I HAVE NOT done is stick her on the trickle charger! I ride everyday. Maybe that's the issue. I will put her on the charger and take off the key chain! Thanks for the comments Ray and Oscar!

I also have never put the dog on the tender, and also do not want to have that lil key not on a key bob for fear it gets lost.

Will pick up a tender at the local HD dlr's sale next weekend. Better to be safe than sorry.

Good tips.

Tender is the only way to go, if I'm not on the bike the tender is.

I took a small section of braided knotable fishing cable 20lb and secured my key, nobody notices unless I point it out. I'll get a picture if anyone is interested.

Never had a problem after placing the dog on life support. It doesn't hurt I guess. After that time of almost being stranded out in the sticks I've never had a problem with it starting.:2thumbs:

KnotSo, I don't think you should have to worry about that - just a problem for the older bikes, before they started installing the new switch. I can tug on my key, and it stays in just fine.

Anybody know when they started installing the new switch?

Chris, dude, thats a great idea! my chrome balls have been taken off the big dog key ! It was a great ice breaker I have to admit!

Unless you ride it as much as Ray and Myself then the battery doesnt have time to run low :roll: 19K and unlike northerners year round riding here
