07 Mastiff shutting down for no reason

My bike is a 2007 Mastiff. I have done nothing to the engine itself. I have upgraded to the Mikuni carb, V&H Big Radius, S&S high performance intake, Wimmer Spike air cleaner, and several cosmetics. Anyway, I just did the 7500 mile oil change and was on a ride (only went about 40 miles) when the bike just shut off. I have NEVER had any issues with the bike. It wasn't too hot outside but the engine seemed to be running hotter than usual. I was told that I probably got bad gas (with water in it) due to the area I was in. We changed the plugs and the bike fired right up. I had my mechanic check the oil system and he went ahead and put on a new oil filter and checked the oil pressure. All checked out. We did not check anything electrical. The next ride I went on, I got about 40 miles again and it did the same thing. I waiting about 15 minutes and the bike fired up and went about 10 miles before doing it again. Thinking maybe a fuel issue, we pulled the carb which was spotless. I then drained the fuel and cleaned the petcock filter (which did have some trash in it). Thinking we solved the problem, I jumped on and rode again. After about 15 miles, it did it again. My mechanic is out due to a new addition to his family and I am seeing if anyone has had a similar issue in the past. Talking to him on the phone, he thinks maybe something with the ignition but says that he will have to look at it. Any suggestions?

Very common that the fuel gas cap has a vent in it and it sticks. Open up the cap and throw away the checkball, it will prevent vapor lock in the future.Good luck and welcome to the forum.

When it fuel related the bike will sputter and eventually shut off. When its electrical it just shuts off. I would check the ignition, wiggle the key and see if it will shut off. Make sure you don't have a ton of shit on the key ring, you should only have the key and maybe a strap attached to the spark plug wire just in case the key falls off. Check your Ignition module, crank senor and the infamous EHC. Apply heat with a heat gun to those three items to see if it shuts off when they get hot. Check for Loose connections on all hot wires going to the ignition, ignition coil, battery, starter and EHC. Finally Do a search on engine shutting down and get an idea of what others have done to solve issues like yours

All my shutdown problem was, were the small wire crimps on the smaller wires to the battery terminals were getting loose. The loose power connection that feeds the EHC would erratically cause shutdowns. CHECK EM!
