check the CB/fuses
Have you measured thevoltage at the battery -- it should be 12.8v for fully charged.
When you turn the key, does the headlight come on?
I will assume that used switch was installed as first shitgun blast for diagnosis.
Since we can not see the bike be as detailed and explicit as you can about what you do and what you see hear, smell etc.
Something you might shrug off could easily give us a indicator of what to check/replace etc.

no sir, headlight does not come on. i have not measured the voltage nor checked the fuses, can you tell where those are please. are they in the box under the tank and yes the switch was for diagnosis . no noises or smells, other than the engine would not accelerate when this started and it was backfiring and throttle barely would accel. turned the ignition off then it had nothing when turned back on, it does have power at the red wire going to the switch, thanks for any help you can give

I would put the original switch back in so you would know at least you didn't change the symptoms. Your symptom could be many things but start by checking your battery first as Mike suggested. All your symptoms point to your battery failing as simple as a loose connection but could be a shorted battery or a charging failure and the bike ran the battery down to a point where it could not support the functions of the bike.
Do some troubleshooting and come back with your clues. This info may help but I'm not sure it's for 2001.

HMAN

I just like my Freedom
Start with checking all your connection points. Especially grounds. Ck inside ur headlight bucket for a melted connector. They make ceramic plugs to replace if it is melted. I had both high and low beams go out and the bike would blow a fuse and not startt until I replaced the lamp. Possibly ur cam sensor went south? Just for grins n giggles, ck the two black rubber caps on top of ur carb. They will dry rot and suck air under throttle. Could be the reason for the the performance issues but not the no start. Just giving ya ideas n things to ck. I do know of one indivudual that had a wire come loose under the coil cover. He put it back on, bike fired right up. Just another thought. Look for the obvious first.
