Was that year covered under the recall and if so was it done! Other than that, short somewhere. How bad was damage, was it limited to just the VR or did it spread and take out other componets, wiring harness, etc?
No recall on the 2003. I caught it before it took anything else out.... just the VR trashed. had a good charge on the Bat it got me home. Headlight went out day before and again just before the fire, hopeing VR was the issue. Speedo has been an issue sence the bike was new...... 10 sensors replaced and 3 head units. Speedo went crazy about a week ago showing TOPPED out speed at 2 MPH. rode to the Dealership and was told it was best I just deal with it because it would happen again. 180 miles round trip and put 1300 miles on the OD.
I do remember reading about issues where there is a possibility of the VR catching fire. Try doing a search here and see what comes up. Once replaced, are all the incoming/outgoing voltage within specs?
there was a VR that caught fire a couple years ago down at daytona beach. if the headlight is going out, might want to go inside and check out the connector. they have a habit of frying. if it is plastic, there is a ceramic replacement.
The reason I remember this is because it was an issue with '05 models.....of which I have. Also, right after I got my bike, the VR and stator went bad.
The recall was on some 05 and 06 models. you have to read the part number off of the back of the VR to determine if it is a faulty unit. For the bikes that had a faulty unit a replacemant for the circuit breaker was supplied. BD supplied a fused unit to replace the circuit breaker.
