2004 Big Dog Chopper Starting Problem

Let me introduce myself first. I am in North Carolina and I have a small MC repair shop and am most familiar with Big Bear Choppers. I have owned a 2000 Big Dog Pit Bull and I am currently working on a 2004 BD Chopper. When I turn the key on the bike starts to crank. I am getting power to the solenoid causing the starter to engage. The switch on the bars appears to be fine, it seems like a relay may be sticking that the start switch usually engages. The battery is toast on this bike as well. Has anyone seen this issue. I will be replacing the battery but I still think the start circuit will be stuck in the "On" position because I hooked my jumper box to the existing battery and it still has the same symptoms. Any insight from someone that has run across this issue or similar would be appreciated. Thanks

Well it's not going to be the starter. I have 12 volts engergizing the solenoid at all times when the key is turned on. It is like your pushing the start button but the button is not pressed. I will have to get a look at the schematic. Thanks

have you checked the contacts in the starter solenoid?
I think he is asking is your starter solenoid burned up causing it to stick in the open position or should I say pushed out, causing it to have power all the time? I have seen this and yes it is possible. Take the end off your solenoid and take the plunger out, inspect, and replace starter if needed. I have seen it with Harley when a relay goes bad it causes this to happen. It will be a good idea to take that primary cover off and inspect the starter jackshaft and clutch ring gear. If I think of anything else I'll write ya. Good luck man.

One other thing I thought of it could be that Damn thunder heart EHC. I just replaced one today on an '03. It did not have the same symptoms but had a bunch of other crazy things going on, burned up ignition in the nose cone, no tail lights, no head light, all caused from that cheap EHC. I replaced all the wires, installed a Twin Tec Ignition, and new EHC and now the old dog is running good as new.

Well thanks for the replies. The starter is doing what it is supposed to do. The problem is, I have power on the small wire which powers the solenoid even when the start button is not pushed. I contacted Big Dog tech support and went through a few things with him and he determined it was the EHC.

Had the same problem. Don't screw around. Just replace the starter or have it rebuilt. The solenoid is sticking. If you don't take care of it quick...it will puke the EHC. I replaced the starter and the battery and all is well in DOG LAND again.

I've seen the same thing or very similar many times to what you are describing. Usually with +/- 8.9 DCV on the solenoid trigger wire when the start button is "not" being depressed.

Check the brushes inside the starter for proper contact seating. These starters have the tendency to get infiltrated with water and cause the brushes to stick in their holding brackets and stop making contact with the armature. I've seen some that will work intermittently and others that stop working altogether.

Hope this helps. :2thumbs:

It wasn't the starter it was the BDM EHC. I replaced it with the Wire Plus kit. Everything works as it should now. Thanks
