In need some help fellas. Last night I hit the start button about 4 times the starter engaged but engine won't turn over. I hit it again and nothing but a pop sound and starter no longer engaged . No burnt smell of wiring. The lights and headlight were still on. I took the battery cables loose and cleaned them. Ground and green wire to starter looked good and tight. Power to starter also was good. Battery was replaced in October. Meter confirmed it was charged. I suspect something with the starter. I couldnt locate the inline fuse from the VR. If it even has one. It was late so pushed it in my buddies garage and looked at it this morning. I checked the easy things this morning. Took the starter button housing apart to see if it came loose. Pushed the starter button and wiggled wires. It was acting up here and there lately before last night. Push the start button wouldn't crank over then would fire. Any help is appreciated . I love this bike but do not trust this thing one bit. Guys around here that have them say the same thing. I will take the loss if someone wants to come load it up for $6000.

Don’t give up. These bikes are really not bad once you get a few things figured out. Someone on this site can help and will be around to answer your concerns. Hate to see you take a loss with a simple issue.

I let people get under my skin. I ordered a new starter and done being a little btch. I still have my softail so not missing out on riding. Trailer it home tomorrow and get to work. 17k miles if it's the starter it's probably do to be replaced. I had it at a party last night and should have charged people to drool on it :oldlaugh:

These Dogs are mostly a love/hate relationship. When they broke, fkn hate em! When they running, its hard to wipe the smile off ur face. Shit, you so close to HDM, its only $$$. Parts just down the road. I would bet you almost get same day delivery? I have been so close to selling so many times....lol. Just keep wrenching.....

Before ya order a starter, make sure the 1/4" bolt hasn't backed off the pinion gear. Ask me how I would guess that....pull the outer primary to ck.

Your bike has a Circuit Breaker that connects to the VR. You may have been on the right track with that thinking. Consider the possibility you were driving around with the VR failing thus not charging the battery. A weakened battery could possibly support the voltage required to give you lights but totally fail turning the starter. You may have jumped the gun ordering the starter before bench testing yours. Water over the dam. While waiting for your new starter have your battery load tested and also pull your starter and test it as well. If the starter works well on the bench re-install it and troubleshoot the charging system.

I figured having an extra starter around couldn't hurt if it wasn't the problem.
