I need to pick up an oil filter tomorrow so I can do my 7500 mi service before saturday.

I noticed some people are running harley filters on their dogs. Anyone know what exact filter that is (part # maybe?) Do I also need to get a new o-ring?

Also need some oil for the primary. Just need 1 quart, right? And I can get that harley too?

For engine oil I'm using Mobile 1 v-twin 20w-50 synthetic

Thanks!

If you go HD Filter be sure you get one for an EVO motor and NOT their Twin Cam. Better yet, get a washable from Jake (bdmridgeback) you never need to buy another and they come in Billet Polished, Billet Chrome or black. Good Luck!

Irish Guy,

The HD filter is the EVO one and listed as HD p/n 63796-77A It does have the o-ring installed but always check to make sure it didn't fall off as well as making sure the old one is removed. Also the 63796-77A normally has a sharpy mark on the flange end to help them know it is a Evo type, I always check mine at the dealer for the mark as well as close inspection to make sure there is no damage or cracks to be on safe side.

On advantage of HD filters over K & N is that is a little smalle and easier to get over sensor if your has one.

Other than that, regardless of what filter or oil you use (I do use the Mobile 1 V-Twin 20W-50 BTW), make sure you change it often such at 2500mile sequence along with filter (or if using one of the reusable, thourgh cleaning). Best maintenance by far and will prolong the life greatly and is just cheap compared to overall cost.

Irish, you can also use these other filters. I like the Wix personally.

The part numbers listed in the previous replies are correct for the Harley and K&N. The part number for an S&S is 31-4102. Make sure you run a 30 micron oil filter. Details below from S&S technical document. FYI only.
I will also be using 20w50 Mobil 1 Synthetic for my engine oil.
32 oz (1 quart) Revtech high performance for primary drive.
20 oz 75/250 Red Line Heavy ShockProof Gear Oil for transmission.

Should I run a 10 micron or a 30 micron oil filter?
A micron rating is given to show the efficiency of the oil filter (one micron is a millionth of a meter).
This leads consumers to believe that the 10 micron filter must be better for their bike. Here is where it can get confusing; though the 10 micron filter may have a higher filtration rating it does not allow the oil to return to the tank as fast. With this in mind, the 10 micron filter was developed for use with the Twin Cam style engine, which has a different oiling system that allows oil to be forced through a more restrictive oil filter. The reason for the tighter filtration was explained by the manufacture as necessary to assure all of the smaller passages, in the Twin Cam style engine, would stay clear of debris. If you run the 10 micron filter with an evolution style engine it will not be able to return oil through the filter fast enough causing the oil to back up into the lower end robbing power and/or causing oil to puke out of the lower end.
The 30 micron filter is designed to work best for your Evolution style engine, the filtration is still excellent and it will not cause oiling issues.
When it comes to filtering oil application is very important. There have been a lot of changes and updates too many filters on the market, with claims of better filtration, don?t be fooled into using a filter that might not be the best for your bike.
