Another dead speedo!!!

Hey guys/gals,
Got a question. I did a search for speedo problems and can't seem to find one with the same year as Rocky's (wife's) bike. She has an '03 Mastiff/107ci. She has the wire plus and her speedo just took a dump. Nothing!! I checked the connection and all looked good. I read some other threads where the speedo is controlled by a sensor on top of the tranny. Is this true for the '03's as well? I also read that some have taken the speedo apart and checked for broken wires. I'll do that if other fixes don't work. So, would you start with the sensor on the tranny? Is this what feeds the speedo on this year bike? So many quesitons. The bike is running well, so for me, the speedo can wait for a rainy day. Thanks....

Brad:cheers::whoop::cheers:

Is the unit getting power --> does it sweep to calibrate when the key is turned to on or ACC (if you have that kind of switch)?

Are the tach and idiot lites getting power?

It's like a reverse sweep! The speedo goes from 0 to -10 and back when the key is turned on. Weird. :loony: It doesn't go above the 0 mark, only in the other direction for a short ways. Any clues what would cause that?:bang:

Brad, my speedo was doing the same thing for a while. It would reverse sweep, but wouldn't move after that. Recently (after my starter relay mess) it has started suddenly working, but only when I hit the throttle hard. Then when I come off the throttle, it falls back to zero. I have a feeling my EHC is just jacked up. My tach gets power but doesn't work either.

Mine went on my 05. every thing else worked but the odometer and the mph needle. turned out to be the sensor on top of the tranny.

Can anyone tell me if the '03s work off the same sensor on top of the tranny? Is there any way to check this sensor to see if it's working....other than looking at a speedo?

My speedo just took a crap as well on my mutt. It steadily got worse from odometer flickering to not recording miles then speedo just quit and now I have no power going to it meaning no lights on the speedo whatsoever. Is it possible to get into the back of the speedo and check the wires going to the circuit board? I believe that the wires came off the circuit board. The tach and turn signals are still fine.

My Dearest Andy,
You are "Jacking" my thread. I'm looking for help here and you want to start your own thread on top of mine. There's plenty of room for all of us to get help here.

First things first, you need to go to the "introductions" tab and post an intro telling us a little about you and maybe a pic of your bike. That should be your first post.

Second, go to the "help wanted" tab and submit a new post giving the details of your problem. When you list your problem on my thread and someone replies, I think they are giving me some help when they are actually giving you help on a problem I don't have.

Good luck and glad to have you as a new member.:whoop::cheers:

Did you ever get it fixed Brad?
Still have not fixed her speedo, but I did find out that I was looking at removing the neutral switch and the speedo sensor is actually located next to that. So, I'll try removing her sensor, clean it up and see if that helps any. I did take her speedo apart. They aren't made to disasemble! :bang: Still, had nothing to lose. After getting it apart, nothing appeared to be broken (wires, etc) so I put it back together. I see you're making that run to Sturgis. Have fun. :whoop: Maybe Rocky and I can make it next year. Be careful for all the fools out there during your trip.

Try this-

BadBrad,

I'm not exactly sure why the speedo would reset to -10mph so I would try disconnecting the speedo head wires and if possible short the POWER (red) and GROUND (black) wires together coming from the 3-wire connector on the speedo unit inside the speedo housing. This may help to discharge the speedo electronics circuitry to zero and perhaps help on the next power-up. These are stepper motor driven units and are IC chip driven based on the signal frequency coming in on the (green) signal wire.
