Another starter problem

Recently replaced starter on 05 mastiff maybe couple months ago. Previous starter was the original low power, replaced with new stronger starter.

Has anyone have experience with new starters going bad? Now making a clicking noise when start button is pressed. Has plenty of juice, acting as if the solenoid is bad now.

What battery are you using? It may show that it is charged, but may have a shorted cell.
It is a super start battery from AutoZone. It is only a few months old as well.

Going by the sound/strength of the clicking from the start to determine it is getting enough juice. Definitely doesn’t sound like any weakness from the battery.

Josh, many batteries sit on the shelf for months...have a charge...a VOLT meter will show that you are FULLY charged, but you may have a bad cell, it's NOT just the VOLTAGE that starts your bike, it's the AMPERAGE....I've had MANY MANY batteries in my life, even in CARS, that show fine on your 'home' testers, volt meters, but had a bad cell...have the battery checked...Also, if it's only 4 months old, have Autozone replace it for free...

Cheers.....

If it turns out your battery is good by getting it tested continue to troubleshoot.
Pull the green wire off the starter solenoid and listen again when you press start. You will still hear the click from your compression releases . Read the voltage on the green wire while it is disconnected it should go to approx 12vdc. If it doesn't the EHC is failing to provide the proper voltage. If you get the proper voltage pull the cover off the solenoid and check to see that the connection didn't get fractured on installation.

Josh,
I don't know if this applies to your bike but it does speak to weak starter output from some EHC 58's made by Elektronikbox . Read starting at post # 753

Good new and bad news.

Thank you everyone for all the input. I tend to over think things at times. Battery was the issue. Started up fine. That’s the good news.

Now new issue to resolve. May have a bad switch. Bike would not turn off once I pressed kill switch. Had to let the fuel run out for it to die. With key pulled out, it still was running. Checked the EHC lights but nothing was lit. Even the ignition light that stays on once activated, was off.

Troubleshooting will have to take place tomorrow since kids football practice prevented the fun lol

Update when I find out the cause.

Forgot to add, turn signal light on the instrument cluster wouldn’t come on but the right turn signal lights were flashing. After a few tries, it started working again. Believe around that time is when the bike became stubborn about shutting down when being told to do so.

If it is gold in color, it's original and can be tested. Curtis at wildsteedworx.com, or my shop can test it. Curtis will have the EHC if yours is going bad.

Okay, what you have is the one they replaced in '05 because of the 04 recall. It may have a silver casing on it. But is still considering original and can be checked by Curtis. Considering how old it is it held up good

Yes it does have the silver casing around it. Could there be an issue from the hand control board also? Just another idea that may have contributed to the problem also. From the few months I’ve had the bike, I have read a lot about the EHC being a problem that requires replacing. Definitely will be replacing that. Also making sure I cover another issue if there is one.

Absolutely there could be a issue with the control board. Easy to check that. I just replaced the boards on a friends chopper for starting issues & signals

I just like my Freedom
Kinda have in mind of taking bike to a shop and be done with it.
Remember these wise words....."why pay someone else to fk up your bike when you can do that for free". My point is you are better off wrenching your own. Most shops wont touch the electrical on a Dog. They just dont know what they are doing. Plenty of knowlege here to get ya rolling. Jm .02
