Backfire

Hi Guys, first off thanks to everybody that gave advise over my last problem, turned out to be a sticking solenoid, repair cost $0.

Now to the new problem.

History. When I viewed the bike before purchase it was fitted with V and H sort shots, looked and went OK, but the guy selling it would not let it go with the V and H, so the "stock pipes were fitted" and I was given the original "2" jets from the S & S carb.

After a few rides I quickly realised that I had to scrap the exhaust, far too long and low for the roads around here. In fact I snapped off the flanges that join the 1 piece silencer can. and scrapped a hole right through the chrome heat Shields to both the pipe and the silencer.

I now have Hooker wide-tails fitted, mat black finish. "must post a pic" So the problem. backfiring down the pipes, mostly on "overrun" When I shut off the gas to coast, I get a rumbling in the pipes and a few pops. I am still running the jets for V and H "sorry don't know the size" All I have checked so far are the plugs, they look normal on colour and condition.

Just to add I also get a little pinking under very hard acceleration.

Not sure about these pipe but decel popping is usually caused by carb running lean. May have to re-jet (larger size) the carb and you are not likely to get rid of all the decel pop.

Yep, try a jet size up. On the pinging, try an octane booster in a tankfull and see if it clears -- may be an overly advanced ignition curve as well.

if your sucking air at the exhaust flanges it will cause backfires in the pipes. IMO

when cold check for smoke at the flange when starting

My decel pop/backfire was because the flange bolts were not tight. Snugged up, and put a second set of nuts on to lock tight-no more problems with that. Good luck!

New exhaust to head gaskets came with the pipes, but the old ones looked OK, I will fit the new ones this wet weekend too. Thanks

start it cold first and check for a puff.

ive had many pipes and for some i'd put in 2 gaskets to get it right.
