battery getting drained

Today I was on my way to myrtle beach and about 60 miles away from the house my bike died. A cop was nice enough to give me a jump with a jump pack, and i made it about another 3 miles. I had the bike towed to a near by bike shop and they checked a few thing and told me that i neeed a new battery and that i also needed a stator and a regulator. The tech told me that with the new battery I should make it back home before it get gets completely drained so i rode it back home and made it. I have a 2004 Mastiff. Does anyone know if those two parts are whats draining my battery and if theres anything else i should get checked.

Its always possible, but to tell you you need a battery, stator, and regulator might also be a dollar grab. You can tell whats going on with 3 relatively simple voltage measurements. At the battery, bike off. At the battery, bike running. At the stator connector plug by oil filter, bike running at idle and revving. This will tell you whats going on. Usually, its the regulator though. Less frequently, the stator.
