Best Starter for a 02 Pitbull with 107" ?

I know this has probably been covered here somewhere but I searched first with no luck so bust my balls if ya want but I tried lol ! My 02 Pitbull with the 107" does not like that first startup of the day and unfortunately it has seen too many without compression releases to survive. So I have a couple of questions, 1st can anyone tell me if my heads were machined for the compression releases originally and the bike wired for them? Also (I know there are probably different opinions on this) but what is the best starter to buy.... I did some research but sooo many different options for kw's, and manufacturers has me confused and I know there is no better advice available than what I have found here from other members.

Any help will be appreciated,
Danny

I put a 2.0kw Ultima with push button on mine (04 Mastiff) a couple of weeks ago. I am also having my stock one rebuilt to have a spare around. The new one with shipping cost me about $170 off ebay. Can't help you with the compression release questions though.

i prefer the spyke starters,i also put a button on mine, check the middle of your rocker box to see if you have a hole on the top,if so look with a mirror,or feel down in there to see if you have maybe a cap or nut on the head, also do you keep your battery on a tender and what battery do you have,im asking because you say your starter dosent like the first start up:cheers:

Thanks for the good info from both, I am using a ODYSSEY Drycell PC 545MJ the specs on it are here : Odyssey PC545MJ I have started keeping it on the tender now but up until recently it started fine hot or cold with no tender. I have load tested the new battery and it checks fine. I was worried something might be binding so I pulled the plugs and rotated the engine with a socket and ratchet and it seems smooth with no tight spots. I checked the cables with a ohm meter, checked all connections. I have to think through the process of elimination it has to be the starter even though when I tested it didnt appear to have any shorts.

should always keep it on a tender, have you charged it and tried to crank it,a battery looses its charge over time, these dogs need all the juice they can get, just what i would do before i by a new starter:D:cheers:

dray, let me know what you find out....my brother n law has a 02 pitbull as well with 107 it also has no compresson releases. men he always has problem cranking.. i think he going try a little better battery, like a big boar.... he just recently put a new battery on and rebuilt stater we keep it on a tender but you can tell it takes 100 percent of the cranking amps just to get that thing to try to turnover....

Hey Dray I have an 03 pitbull had no com releases, just the factory plugs at the center of my heads, took the motor apart this winter and installed the S&S manual comp releases..battery wise you need something over 300cca ,I like the Big Boar, keep it fed with a tender..with a good battery and releases be carefull not to over do the KW on the starter you need SOME resistance on the starter 1.4 to 1.6 is fine..cant go wrong with spyke....
