Charging System

I picked up a 2005 Mastiff a couple weeks ago. I'm not suggesting anything is wrong, but wanted to run something by the forum and see if anyone else experiences the same. currently the mastiff is on a trickle charger in order to maintain the battery. My question is, if I start the bike, and let run for about 5 minutes, would it be normal for the charger to take about and hour to an hour and half for the battery to show a full charge? I'm curious if the starter takes that much juice to get her started. Again, not suggesting anything wrong, just looking for your opinion.

Not suggesting you do this. I just replaced my stator, rotor, vr because my stator was shot, would not charge the new deka 310 battery. You might want to check the voltage coming to your battery from the charging system. This was on a '08 mastiff with 3250 actual miles. I also replaced the ehc which was going bad because of the charging issue.

Sounds normal. It depends on battery health and charging output. These bikes need a fully charged good battery. 310 CCA or higher. Is yours the 117?

rectifier, stator and rotor will be the next step.
check the tension with running engine. How much

Oh boy, EHC was one thing i was hoping not to here lol. bike has 16K miles, the tach and speedo are a bit flakey but everything else seems to work correctly. The battery is manufactured by Voltz power LLC. VT20HL-BS-FS 12V20AH. yes on the 117. i have not done any testing. i can confirm the ehc is original.

How much Voltage comes back?
Battery check with a load test. 12,8 Volt show a full charge.check the battery with load test down to 250cca.
rectifier = Voltage regulator have a test with ohmmeter too. only know it from manual but can send to u.
U will find in service manual chapter8 here in the forum.

ill check that out, appreciate it.

Gone bad battery would be the cheapest solution.
All other parts u can get from Eric and Donna.
Curtis at wildsteelworks can help you too.

Ok, standard charging system on a HD style bike does not do any significant charging until you are at appx 2000 rpm.
This is one of the reasons I use the overkill system of the CompuFire 40A three phase system. It puts out like 25A at 14.25v at idle and at 2800rpm puts out 40A.
I've had these in both my BigDog's and could not be happier with them.
Some people will say, you don't need it, it's overkill. Yeah it probably is overkill, but I like overkill.

Troubleshooting your issue
For you the first thing to do is charge bike with tender.
Remove tender and measure battery voltage -- should be 12.8v
Start bike, measure voltage as you ramp up the RPM to about 2-3K and watch the voltage. Should be 13.8 to 14.4v(max)

If these number do not match your results report back here with and we can point you to the next step to locate the issue and resolve it.

appreciate it. ill report back tomorrow evening. I can confirm the battery is good to go. figured i would have that tested simply to rule it out. pics of the bike have just been posted in the new member section.

Measure the voltage anyway and check the date code.
I have seen batteries pass load test at shop and fail in high-compression bikes like ours.
There is very little margin for error in this system with certain things.

Welcome from NJ,
JBM nailed it in post #12 . If you have confirmed that the battery is good and also your voltage when running is good You don't have a problem with the bike. Yes ! Starting the bike does take a lot out of the battery. If all seems well but your still uncertain it can't hurt to go out and get a new battery for your new bike. Big Dog's love strong, healthy batteries :chopper:

Do you know if all power is used for starting the bike? I noticed headlight would basically go off while attempting to start.

These are links to the 05 Service Manual and Owners Manual. The info for the headlight function is in Chapter 6-5 Page 6-29. Lots of reading to help you get familiar with your bike!!! Enjoy compliments of Mr. Wright.
