Clutch Adjustment

My clutch was slipping upon acceleration so I've done a search on how to adjust your clutch. I followed it step by step and it seems I made it worse. After adjusting it, it slips even more so I tried adjusting again and if I turn the allen in till I feel pressure and back off 1/4 turn, I can barely squeeze the lever. It seems the clutch is engaged and I don't know what to do from here. What the fuck did I do wrong and what do I do now?

Hey Jimi,

Thanks for the reply. I've adjusted this before without incident but oh well, Murphy's law is hitting me hard as of late. I will attempt to adjust in the AM. I will be at HD at 11:00 if I can get it straightened out. I will pm you my phone number.

Adjust it without using the Allen wrench. Loosen the nut and turn the screw counter clock wise (out) with the Allen wrench about 1/2 turn of so to make sure it is loose. Now use your fingers ONLY to turn the screw in clock wise till if stops. Once it stops back it out 1/4 turn with the Allen wrench hold the screw in place with the Allen wrench and tighten the nut. That should be all you need.

NOTE: Sometimes when you use the Allen wrench to find the 0 latch or to bottom out the screw you have a tendency to tighten or go a little to far because you have the leverage of the wrench. When you use your fingers you can find that 0 latch easier.

... and make sure you loosen the clutch cable completely before you change the pushrod adjustment. 1/2 a turn works for me. I do it engine cold too.

Like Slider said loosen the cable adjuster on the down tube first, then adjust the push rod and lock down, then adjust the cable adjuster on the down tube. The cable adjuster on the down tube adjust the hand lever to about and 1/8" or less.

First just take off your primary cover in your left side and make sure the 1 1/2 bolt holding your clutch chain is first still on, and if still on, not backing it self off..... Just happene to me last night trying to adjust cluch and it would just not work. So check it and then replace the fluid.

I changed Primary oil about 800 miles ago and the oil is now grayish in color. Got the primary cover off and I don't see any wear on anything. The Primary chain has alot of play in it. I am going to check the clutch hub nut for correct torque and adjust chain and re-assemble. Not sure what else to do.

Big shout out to JimiZee for stopping by to lend a hand. After I removed the clutch pack, I had not reassembled it correctly so Jimi sent a pic of an assembly diagram. I believe I got it back on the road. Need a quart of primary fluid and take a test run. I wil follow up tomorrow. You da man Jimi.
