Clutch question

Hi members, I have 2007 Mastiff. Lately I have had one issue with my clutch engagement. Then I start my bike and start to drive, everything works as it should be. After one-two hours ride, ( weather is also quite hot ) then I put bike on the 1 gear, it starts to drag me slightly, despite that clutch lever is fully pulled in. Next morning it repeats the same way. Free play of clutch lever seems ok. Any ideas what can cause such problem?

Heat expansion.... 'weather is also quite hot' = Normal under said conditions.

Q: When it's cold, my clutch lever to perch gap is... sloppy or tight?
Q: When hot, my lever has no static gap at the perch.. my lever almost meets the grip without a pull on it. Which?

You might just need to adjust the clutch. Adjustment will drift with wear combine that with the extra heat and that could cause this.
How many miles on the bike?
When was the last time the clutch was adjusted?
Bike has now 11.000 miles, I bought this bike last summer odo was 8000 mil, so I guess that nobody has adjusted this clutch before. I will do clutch adjustment and look...:)

Hi Mike, How I can remove clutch adjust cover? It seems that there are no securing bolts, just cover and o-ring, but I tried to remove it with screwdriver, but it is so tight, afraid to destroy chrome surface.

I take the end of a wood handle hammer, put it on the tooth and hit the hammer head that won't mark the chrome. When you put it back on just do it hand tight (full strength) which will compress the o-ring and keep it from walking loose.

Hi again,
I adjusted clutch according to the video, but my experience was, that 1/4 turn back from the end - my clutch was slipping heavily, added 1/4 turn more, now is more or less ok. But seems, that it still wants to drag me lightly ( on 1 gear ) and my clutch lever is engaging in upper part. So I think may be my clutch plates are worn out? Rode 100 miles today and got sharp whistling noise then starting engine ( it appears for a second then engine starts up, after that, its gone ) Could it be connected with my clutch adjustment? - clutch throwout bearing may be? Any ideas?

The general consensus is a 1/4 turn to half turn back once lightly seated. Harley-Davidson says it’s 1/2 to full turn. Starting at a half. Both my bikes were closer to a half or just a little more to get it to the sweet spot. You may have to adjust it once more just a little more than 1/2 a turn. Good luck! Keep us posted!

There is two adjustments. First loosen the cable adjuster, usually on the down tube. Next adjust the clutch down on the transmission, right hand side 05 and later. 1/4" to 1/2" as stated above. The cable adjustment on the down tube only adjusts the lever play. I run Harley primary drive oil only.

Hi,
I have played with clutch push rod adjustment couple weeks now. Put also fresh primary fluid. Have found the point there clutch is not slipping any more ca 1 full turn from lightly seated (1/8 turn anti clockwise from light slipping under hard acceleration ) Adjusted clutch lever 1/16 in. free play. But it still drag me on 1 gear and hard to find neutral. What does it mean? Is it time to change clutch pack? Any ideas?

I’m a guessing you are going to need to change out the clutch pack. Definitely should not be pulling in 1st. You may always have a bit of trouble finding neutral. I think it’s just the nature of the beast. But it shouldn’t be pulling you in gear with the clutch in & adjusted correctly.

How about the quick and dirty right out of the pits in a wink.
1. Stack the steels and hold it in your palm. Look for the warp or air gap, you look all the way around.
2. Change that one steel plate, a burned plate, find a used flat, and the other that has fiber.
3. Find the cut or more flat side of the steels/fibers [steels for sure] and those face you as you install each plate.
4. Fire off and get the hell of the pits ~ endurance racing quickie/next practice, etc.

Signed,
Oh Look = N that quick!

Pull the clutch pack and messure the thickness of the whole stack. Should be a minimum height of 1.965"
