CRANKCASE MARBLES

Looks like I'll be tearing into the crankcase this weekend. Started to develop what sounds like marbles or a whirring sound down by the crank cover on right side. Checked it out with a stethescope and sure enough...noise is right in that area. The noise comes and goes and is not constant but can definately tell when the whirring noise starts. Thinking the right main bearing, roller, or maybe even a cam :<(

If it's the cam and you're running a stock cam (I think a .585) I have one that came out of my '05 you're welcome to have.

Appreciate the offer Brad! I'll let ya know this weekend what I find. My stock cam is a .569 but if you have a .585, I can definately use that. Can you send a 12 pack of beer via USPS?

Thank's Five...I'll give an update this weekend. I remember reading a while back about a lower end problem you had but can't remember exactly. Curious what it was?

Started the inspection and looks like the cam and rollers are good to go but still need to look at the right main pinion bearing. Anyone have any tips on how to get to the bearing?

I know when a piston breaks apart or scores it will sound like marbles.I had a small screw fall into the intake(butterfly shaft) many moons ago noise would come and go then it failed a valve. If you have metal failure inside engine a cheap tool is cut open oil filter and look for metal. Most of the time it will show up on the spark plug with a damaged tip.Post lots of pictures for us too.

Thank's chop. The noise is definately coming from the crankcase area. The only other thing I haven't checked is that right main bearing. Reading up on a few instructions from the s&s site to figure out how to get to it and open to suggestions. I also ran a magnet through the oil in the crankcase and fortunately no metal was found.

Anyone know how to get to the right main bearing in the crankcase??? Do you have to split the case?

Yes sir....all well in the tank. It's more of a whirring sound that comes and goes whether sitting still or moving, pointing me more towards a worn bearing.

Your on the right track..... my rod bearing failure began with the whirring sound, just as you described .... to answer your question regarding acsessing your main bearing right side, you need to bench it and split the cases.

Run out was my next step Marv, thanks! The cam needle bearing looks good and is the Torrington. In the mean time this is what I have found. Looks like my cam and bushing have significant grooves worn into them. Now the question is what's causing it?

Brian, I am assuming the photo is of the bushing in the cam cover and the end of the cam. It appears that the bushing may be the cause of your noise. If so, its time for a new cam and bushing. That would be a lot better than the crank bearing and a full tear down.
