I took my bike into Tampa Big Dog 2 days ago to just buy some heim joints as mine are sticking bad, they did replace mine N/C with some new ones that he said are Teflon coated ones that feel pretty smooth. Also, told them about my 5th speedo that has stopped working and stays fogged (tach still works) but the damn thing doesn't record mileage so I never know when it's time to gas up.... . Anyway they put in a request for a new speedo, we will seen what happens!!!!!
According to the paperwork they gave me it states (Remove plug from back of speedo as per factory temp fix)
This picture was taken the next day....Obviously that temp fix didn't stop the fogging....

FOGGED SPEEDO

Alicat, you won't have any problem getting that one replaced, it meets the criteria for replacement IMO. As for the fogging issue I don't believe BD has closed the book on this common problem yet:(

I believe they are doing a mod on Raywood's speedo this week. He's had several, and they like using him as a test bed since he rides so many miles. I think they said they were going to seal it somehow.

It certainly seems strange they can't get a handle on this one - and autometer is supposed to be a reputable line - how many other bikes besides BD do you hear of with a fogged speedo?

I am in the same boat, 5th speedo, tach works, fogging, and the speedo doesn't work or record miles when the temp is below 40 deg. They are replacing a board (tach control board?) and are going to look into some EHC software update.

Mine is in the shop now, been there 3 weeks this Saturday  . This is the second speedometer and BigDog doesn't want to replace it. Tech said they were going to try a different speedometer mount and update the firmware, but BD hasn't sent anything :bang: . My Speedometer was fogging up and the needle bounces around. Sure wish Bigdog would hurry up, starting to get warm around here. Warranty expires April 1. Wonder if BD will still cover the speedometer after the warranty expires, because I can see this happening again. :loony:

There are a few different fixes in the works.

One that is out is the software update to the newer USB style EHCs. That will fix the speedo not working issue.

The fogging is a sperate issue. Pulling the plug as Alicat stated is a temp "fix". But as P8 said, they have another fix in the works. But that's all I'll say...

Yup...on my second one and it wont read when cold, and it fogs like a bitch. Hell I rember back in the 70's we had dirt bikes that we used to beat the shit out of, leave outside for days, and hit with a water hose whenever we felt like it...those speedos never fogged up or went out...cable drive, gotta love it!

:D They are going to put Raywood and his speedo in a special "bubble" for his long strange trip.

Good Luck Alicat -- can't ride well without something for a mileage counter! Pretty clear there is a market here for a rewire kit for the older bikes (Dump the EHC and the speedo for something else completely)

ChaCha, I met a guy the other day who has an Big Dog 05 chopper that he was riding. He took out all his Big Dog electronics, rewired his bike totally no computers controlling anything.
I told him about this board and gave him the web address and told him he should get on board here, as there might be a great interest in his services. We'll see what happens.

Alicat -- good to hear. With all the repeated problems with speedo's and EHCs, I'm doing the research now in anticipation of the next EHC failure. If it makes it to November, I'll be tearing her down for new paint anyway.

Good luck on the replacement!

Thinking out loud

Im hung over today so i might not make sense but what if the electronics or the light in the speedo is warming the inside of the speedo, and if you live in a humid climate it reaches the dew point in side the speedo on the surface because the surface is cold. In that case the only thing that what fix it is to insulate the outside of the speedo or to have air flow throught the speedo, two holes (one on back and one on front) not one. It might ugly but worth a shot to try. MAN i feel like shit!!!
