First problem of many

Hey guys, new member bringing problems already. I bought my bike six months ago, guy couldnt tell me who made it but comparing pics it looks like a Ridgeback, its a 2009 with a 113 in S&S.

So I had some problems with it running the other day but need to fix this problem first. I went to charge the battery and it appears that it was wired as a positive ground, is this normal? After charging, it began to melt/burn the voltage regulator wire to the starter. Then I started to only get a click when trying to start, except once in a while itll turn over. So I cleaned my solenoid contacts which didnt fix it, then tried pushing in the plunger and didnt get anything, does this mean solenoid is shot? Also I have replaced the battery.

I know its alot of information but hopefully someone can make sense of it, thanks for any help.

Might want to toss up an Intro first with some pics and then double check your VIN#. Or call any BDM dealer or BDM performance parts and verify you have a Ridgeback. The 113 was not available on that model for that year, or any year.

Welcome from Washington State hope you like the site. As stated above you might want to post some pics of the scoot you're riding because it doesn't sound like a Big Dog by the description you mentioned unless the motor was changed for some reason. A pic would help greatly...

It must be a different year model cause if it's a 09 it's got a 117. Is it even a chopper or is it a pro street style. If i'm guessing right the coyote had a 113 but not positive.

No, all evo style are 117 with the exception of the K9 250 that came out in 2010/2011 it has 111. None of the bikes came stock with a solenoid plunger button

Not sure of the cu in of the models with the X wedge.
Somebody correct me if I be wrong.

Bourgets had the 113 on many of there choppers.

Im at work so thats the only pic I have on my phone. Like I said I was just goin off like styling, I really dont know what it is. I read the starter sticky and my starter is the same as that one. Im not particularly versed in working on these bikes so I might have to seek professional help. Im taking the 113 in on the sellers word so maybe he could be wrong. Im sure someone can point me in the right direction

The sellers report of sale should show what the bike is as well as the title would give a make and model

I checked the title when i bought it all it says is its special construction and the model jusy says custom. Well I guess now I know its not a big dog. I guess Ill just have it looked at by a pro, thanks for the help.

I have not heard of a positive ground on any American/Jap made cycle. There are some commercial motors that use + grounding, but then again not for many years. When it come to cycles, European cycles (Norton, Triumph, others) had positive grounds. That would be the place to start for your tech guy.... Good luck.

Please excuse my ignorance when I ask this question but can I just simply switch the wires on the starter and battery to make it a nrgativr ground? I also have a key and push button wire, same with switching them to the positive? Thanks for the well wishes, I have a feeling Im gonna need it.

Positive to starter, Negative to starter mounting bolt. I wouldn't be switchen any wires. How many wires do you have on the battery? If the main battery cables are correct, sounds like you have something else crossed.

Mine is wired with the negative to the starter and positive to the mounting bolt, I know weird. I have a ignition wire and push button wire on my battery too. I actually figured out the starter issue, the bolt for the battery power got spun, put it back and no starter works and regulator isnt burning up either.

On to the real problems, I was out riding and started to hear this tinsel sounds coming from the left side, sounded almost if you pull a rubber band real tight and flick it. Then the I lost a lot of power and it died. Got it back running with some smoke out the exhaust and real low on power but it ran. Made it part way home and it quit again and wouldnt start up at all. The only time it even attempted to fire I was pumping the throttle real hard. Now it turns over but nothing else. Any ideas? could this be a clutch issue it was a little out of adjustment, or maybe fluids?

I know its not a Big Dog but any ideas would be appreciated.

Clutch shouldn't have anything to do with it not firing. I'm just puzzuled by this positive ground thing you got. If its not firing you either aren't getting fuel or you aren't getting spark.

Well I dont have any spark. Im going to test the coil when I get home, but do you guys think that while my voltage regulator wire was smoking that I couldof fried my electronic ignition?

1st make sure the positive is not hooked up to ground. neg to starter just isnt right no matter who built it start chasing wires Not as fun as chasin skirts but beer must be involved too

Ok, so I wasnt gettin any spark and the fluid started to leak out of my coil so I got a new one. Now I wanna make sure I have it wired correctly, hopefully someone has some knowledge with positive grounds. I have my positive and negative wires and then two more wires, one runs to my push button starter and one to the key, should they both go to the negative, power, terminal?

looks like a custom made from the pic...what i mean is someone made it in their shop. That could also explain the electrical problem.
