went for a ride the other day and heard a noise at idle. so while i had a long weekend, i decided to tear down a few things. took off exhaust so i could clean, adjust and grease clutch rod. took off front caliber and cleaned (waiting on parts). done some research about noise and took off primary cover to inspect.. only thing i found is nut holding sprocket on motor shaft seems to be loose. washer behind moves. my problem is it wont turn either direction..:loony: anybody got any ideas....included my fix to not having to pick up primary oil..and a picture of the nut.

I'm not a engine person so I cannot answer the loose washer on the sprocket question. My BDM manual calls for that nut to be torqued to 175 ft-lbs (2008) 2006 may be different. I would wait till someone with a little more experience chimes in. I know there were issues in the past with the clutch basket nut coming loose so you may want to check that one as well.

As far as the primary oil if I'm reading your post correctly you do not want to pick up new oil? There is no way in hell I'd put old oil back in when you can put new oil in for under $10.00....

dog,
First, you may want to find out, from BikerDream on here, if your bike falls under Service Bulletin # 1074, Primary Chain Alignment.
"All 2005 model year motorcycles & all 2006 model year motorcycles produced on or before 2-16-06."
If so it might be able to be corrected at no expense to you!

Otherwise,
Washer shouldn't move freely. :nono:
Standard RH threaded nut, Red loctite, '06 torque to 150lbs.
Old oil is trash.:nono:
Replace with new, recommend "non"-synthetic trans. & primary fluid. :2thumbs:

dead

That's a cool drain setup you used there. Lot better than my use of plastic then drained all over the floor!!

I wouldn't re-use the oil though. Just get a qt of ATF, only cost a couple bucks and would be better than putting that dirty old oil back in.

Been by some of the bike places here in town and they said the same thing about not being loose. one said to to get the impact gun and take it off and lock tite it back...as far as the old oil....will never use old oil even though it has only been in there for only 3 months.... it just a cat littler bag taped so all the oil falls into it and drains to one end that has been sniped and into a pan.. dont have the messy clean up on the floor....

That will cause a lot of noise, clanking type, if the front or rear nut is loose. Like others have said, make sure the rear nut (clutch hub nut) is also tight. You most likely will need the clutch hub shim as well. I use an air impact, a good one of at least 650 ft lbs. to remove and install the two nuts. Remember that the front is normal right hand and the rear is left hand when loosening it. Most likely the front is just loaded up with Red locktite and was never torqued down to spec.
Let us know what you find.
