Help with speedo

I just bought a 2004 BD bulldog and I am having speedo issues. When I turn the key on the speedo does its sweep from 0 to 30, Is this all that the speedo should sweep to? Or should it sweep from 0 to the end? The issue I am having is that when I go over 30mph it pegs back down to 0. Any help is greatly apprecited. Thanks

My '07 Mastiff has the latest software upgrades. It makes one full sweep when you click the ignition on, then one full sweep AFTER the engine starts. My speedo was doing "funny" stuff like yours last year, and a battery replacement and keeping the bike on a battery tender full time when not riding corrected the problem. They had to change the EHC (thankfully under warranty) in order to have the correct interface cord on the EHC to do the download. There are a number of threads on here that will give you the correct readings required for your battery. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Thanks

I just checked it again by putting the key on and the first time it cycled to 3k and then I tried it again and it only cycled to 1k. Can this be the speedo or is their a sensor that can be bad. Anyway where can I buy these parts and do you know how much? Thanks for the replies so far.

Does your speedometer seem accurate up to 30 MPH or does it seem to get there way to fast? Your calibration may be off on the speedometer. See what numbers show up in the odometer area when you first turn your key on and the speedometer is sweeping.

I changed the sensor today and took it for a test ride - well the problem still exists just a little different - If i drive slowly and gain speed the speedometer works ok, but if I give it the gas fast teh speedometer drops all the way down and climbs real slow - any ideas???

the speedometer says 134880 when it is cycling up

It seems acurate if I get up to mph slowly - it is way off if I accelerate fast

Is the the same speedometer from the factory or has it been replaced under service bulletin? Can you post a picture of it if it is not the one it came with from the factory? Your calibration is correct, close enough you wouldn't notice a difference anyway.

Pic of the speedometer

This is the pic of the speedo. What are the numbers that come up on the speedo when it is cycling, They have 2 different numbers that come up then the odometer shows.

I had that old speedo and it used to also cycle the number of hours on the bike. A lot of those old speedo's were found to have one or more of the three internal wires to have broken or cracking from there soldering.
There have been a couple on here that have broken them open and re-soldered the wires back on and broght the unit back to life.

Just one more thought,
Ray

My speedo would do the cycle but not register ANY speed. Rock Star Customs took it apart and resoldered all the connections. Its fine now.

How do you get the speedo out of the housing. I took the speedo off of the bracket but could not get any further

Does anyome know how to get the speedo out of the housing so I can check to see if the wires are loose. See pic attached
Remove it from the bracket and you will see the two bolts that allow it to fall apart. Call Nelson for a service manual, it's all in there!!

My Speedo did the same thing. I took it in (to the Dealer) and they uploaded a new firmware to it. Seems to be fine now.

I changed my speed on my 07 K-9 to a Dakota digital. Easy to do and it's as great as eveverybody says it is. Nice to see how fast ypu are actually going. I thought my scooter handled terrible until I changed the speedo and found I was doing about 60 into turns. Much better handing at 40 instead.
