Just rebuilt starter - wont engage

I just had my starter rebuilt, put everything back together, went to start up the dog and got a continious whirring sound - no engagement. I took off the primary cover to see the starter action and the jack shaft bolt turns but the starter gear does not enage! What am I doing wrong?

It pops out but the bolt keeps spinning and the gear wont. bizzarre.

Is the bolt torqued to 12 lbs? Remove the jackshaft and make sure it's installed properly.

It wont tighten all the way. Feels like it slips.

I would take back to who rebuild it and have them fix properly

It's probably stripped, and that would cause the problem right there. Take out the bolt and inspect the threads. Are you jamming the gear as you tighten the bolt? If not it will turn the starter.

Ok. It's fixed. if anyone has the same problem, here's the answer. The coupling ring easily falls out when replacing the starter. It's important to get it back on facing the right way. II had to take everything back apart to reinstall this thing. Very frustrating but Im back on the road!
