Does anyone know what signifigance the 5 digit number has when you first start the bike. Mine reads something like 48526...does this mean anything?

According to the local BMD Service Manager ... that doesn't mean anything. Just the display when they're intially powered up.

(WAS tempted to tell you that's the number of hours on the bike when you're engine dies though)

I've seen the answer here or on other sites - can't recall right now.....I am pretty sure that the number is related to how the speedometer / odometer are calibrated.

There is a recalibration procedure described in the Service Manual, but I don't have that with me at the moment.

You guys with the older models the speedo will flash the number of hours on the bike.

The number the speedo displays on startup is the number of PULSES generated by the speedometer sensor during calibration. The sensor is located on the top right rear side of the transmission.

The speedo can be recalibrated by holding down the speedo trip/reset button while the key is turned from OFF to ON, to enter calibration mode. The bike is then driven exactly two miles, which generates a pulse count of about 98880. After pressing the trip/reset button to exit calibration mode, the speedo will exit and display HALF the accumulated pulse count - around 49440, which is probably close to what you are seeing on a stock bike.

Why recalibrate? Only if you have changed tire diameter, or pulley sizes, etc. - or for some reason you think your speedo is way off.

Before you try it, though, be sure to read the whole procedure in the Service Manual - several steps were paraphrased in my description above.

I was curious on mine as I never saw a calibration number before. So I just went out and started the bike. When I turn on the ignition, I don't get the calibration numbers. I just get the engine hours and then it flips to the mileage. But mine is a 2003 Chopper. Newer models are likely different.

My speedo is on the money, I've checked it against my GPS and it's right on the money and the mileage markers on the freeway.

mine is right on with GPS unless I gun it and then it reads about 15 mph slow but then I know I am speeding when in 6th gear at 3 grand RPM
