After a 120 mile ride I heard a knock one so loud infact I could hear it over the headphones I was listening to my Ipod on.I want to make sure it was not a figment of my imagination I rev it up knock went away but it came back at low rpm and idle so took bike out of gear still knocking so I switched off and coasted to station.I waited on rest of group gassed up restarted no knock.I rode 50 miles home slow, normal and balls out still no knock.WTF??Anyone got any ideas?

Crank sensor maybe dirty and not sensing properly? Maybe? Or not talking to the ECH properly? Maybe? Or ECH?

Cheap gas. I had this happen and stopped at a station that I new had good gas, filled up and no problems. I had done the dumb thing and stopped at the El Cheapo station and filled up on what I thought was premium. Also to combat this problem, I run a cap full of Marvel Mystery Oil after each fill up. Spark plugs stay a nice tan color, intake stays clean, and I have rebuilt a previous twin cam engine and the top of the pistons have very little carbon build up.

Knock like hammer knock? If you can get a can cutter remove the oil filter cut it open.look for metal.Scraping then knock could be something in the primary.do same thing drain oil out look for metal. dont want to scare you but this would be my luck if this happen to me again. Damit i hate that when this happens.

What kind of knock? Where did it come from...left side or right side?
Metallic sounding? Bad gas don't normally knock at low rpm or idle, that would be more likely under acceleration.

One thing I learned working for H-D is get as much info as you can from the customer (you guys).
Example:
acceleration or deceleration?
tick, knock or bang?
left side or right side?
as soon as you started riding or after a while?
does it do it in all gears?
clutch engaged or disengeged?
any work done recently, if so...to what?

Kinda like motorsickle CSI! Your bikes talk to you, you just have to learn to speak motorsickle!

If I was working in a shop, I'd be askin the same questions but charging 60-80-100 bucks an hour shop labor.

If the EHC is causing any noise, it's because the studs broke off on the back.
About the only sounds an EHC can cause is a beeping horn due to low battery or a nice loud backfire through the exhaust becaust the ignition got temporarily interrupted.:2thumbs:

Dogvet as far as the location of the noise I cant tell it only lasted a few min while riding but seem to go away as I rev the motor up.It sounded like a hammer knock.I rode it about 10 miles yesterday to get it up to temp and checked the trans fluid and it looked like foam that tells me its low.I am going to drain trans and check for shavings but dont think its the trans because it stopped when i reved motor. It has not knocked since.

some times then the engine gets hot & you use syn. oil in engine youll get a knock up in the head area, at idle, on the left side, [low oil pressure] if you run an oil pressure gauge on the head oil feed you would see it!

reloader that could it this was the first 100 plus mile ride since i went to syn oil.I have ridden several short runs but nothing long.

f you run an oil pressure gauge on the head oil feed
Anyone got a pic of this location? I have seen em down by the sending unit but no where else. When located up above, is there also another gauge down below?

in florida i get it all the time after a lot of stop and go driving on a hot day,
only thing with syn. oil is more engine noises!
syn. oil is better for lubing the engine, and does not oxidize at high temps,
like dino oil "I just don,t get the more noise thing"
the four ball tests don,t lie! [and yes I said four ball test ] ok! i know its coming so give it your best,

its the big bolt/screw on the oil pump, the screen you clean when you change your oil is under it!

You might want to check your primary chain tension. It will make a good knock when it is a bit loose. Especially during deceleration, this causes the ipper strand of the chain to flutter and if you have aloose spot in the chain, it could contact the inside of the primary case.
