With a carb, I only use the choke if it's been cold and has set awhile and/or if it won't start on first crank. I follow the manual...turn it on, hit the compression release button, two twists of the throttle, then hit the starter button. If you do start it with the choke on, try to turn the choke off as soon as you can and use the throttle to hold it at a steady rpm (around 1200 or so) until it's warmed up and holds idle on its own. If you keep the choke on too long, you'll end up with fouled plugs sooner than later. Simple instructions, but they work for me. Good luck!
