No start clicking relay

I have an 02 pitbull. It is having a problem I have seen in a few threads.

Clicking noise from contorl box under the tank but no start. It does start if I run 12v directly to solenoid from the battery + post.
.
I took the 12v line going to the solenoid and ran it to a relay. And then used that relay to deliver 12v directly from the battery 12v to the solenoid and the bike starts reliably.

So conclusion is the relay in the control box has shitty contacts that can only deliver enough current to run a relay but not enough to run the start solenoid.

The question is:??
Can I replace the relay in the box or do I have to replace the whole box?
And what is the box called and how much is it?

Thanks for any help in advance.

107 s&S no compression release.

The bike starts fine with juice directly to the starter solenoid. The problem is due to the relay in the control box under the tank.

And the click happens every time you try to crank. The click is the relay energizing but the contacts are obviously bad

Sorry KnotSo, I didn't even pay it any mind, DUH!!! :loony:

Thanks! :2thumbs:

But it shouldn't be his battery if he can start it by just using another relay and the same battery.
'02s are the only year that used these starter relays. That says everything about it right there.

Hello just reading the thread and I had the exact problem and I did a system check and ran a jumper wire and bike started, the relay is a simple switch by zettler or a basic 94-2006 harley softail replacement cost 5.75 cent from your local harley dealer, but one added note the relay will blow from too much amperage being drawn from the starter check all connections, charge on battery, and if its the orginal starter for the 02 then it may need cleaning or replaced....in addition to the stater I found my switch on the handlebar was correded causing excessive draw of amperage....to the point it caused a short in the EHC shutting down the bike completly... hope this helps and good thing about the later big dog model is the parts will interchange with stock harley parts.

Okay, Picked my bike up from a shop. I already posted on how bad this shop is so now to the problem.
When I try to crank the bike I am getting that clicking noise and the starter is damn hot. This weekend I am going to pull it apart any ideas on where to start?
1. Just replaced battery.
I need to get my tools on the bike this weekend and do some work!
I am thinking bad starter any way to trouble shoot the starter??
