Noise when down shifting

When the clutch is not engaged and I'm coasting to a stop light. As I down shift the primary gets loader with each gear. It is almost a dragging noise.

you would have to remove your primy cover and check the bolt on the clutch basket....tranny nut......here is a pic of mine when I was at Gas Mans last Aug. we used red loctite on it! 100 ft lbs

Thanks for the picture. I have to go out of town next week. So depending on if I have time or if the shop has time to do it while I'm gone.

I would think if his clutch nut was coming loose he would feel the slack in his clutch cable when he pulled in his clutch handle. When mine came loose if you rev-ed the motor the handle would move back and forth depending how the nut spun...
In the end trying to get home, it "clutch basket" backed out until it hit the inner primary and put some nice grooves in it...
It sounds like the throw out bearing to me. Either way he is at the clutch basket.. Check or change your transmission fluid while you are at it and see if it is milky or contaminated with water.

Lee the only problem is the noise when down shifting. The clutch is fine otherwise. Looks like it will need to be opened up and checked out.

JR - remember this nut is a reverse thread. Maybe your clutch just needs adjusting. Mine doesn't always downshift smoothly - a quick zip on the throttle whilst downshifting makes it smoother

I wish I had more money.
May be the compensator nut as well. Either way it will take all of 30 minutes to fix as long as that is all it is.

Have any of you had any problems removing the clutch nut after red locktite was put on?
Not when I used a electric impact gun. When I tried it with a breaker bar I had some problems locking the chain down until someone told me to just stick a shop rag in the works and it locked up the movements, but the impact does the trick.

The 2007 does not have a compensator.

Thanks for all the help but I dropped it off at the shop. It was a matter of not having enough time. I have to travel for work tomorrow and will not return until Friday. Looks like nice weather this weekend and I would rather come back and ride it, not work on it. I will post what was repaired when I return.

The shop called toady to tell me that it was a bearing in the trans that was making the noise.

Well I took it to the shop and I still have the same problem and it is also making chirping. Sounds like from the primary. I don't have the time to run it back to the shop this week and would like to see if I if I could fix it myself. If I take off the primary cover will I need to replace the gasket?
