Oil Cooler Problems

Ok so i havent had too many questions that i couldnt find answers for with the many experts on here already that answer and document anything very very well. But i came across something that i could use some help with. I recently bought a pro one oil cooler (without the gauge) and took it to the local shop where i have had all my mods done. Now hes stuck because everytime he goes to test drive it the oil pressure maxes out and it pushes oil out of the rocker boxes, tappet covers, etc basically it will push oil out where ever it can. Now hes taken the motor apart like 4 times to change the gaskets and etc since its leaking oil and finds nothing wrong with the motor itself. So i had him remove the oil cooler and tested it and it works just fine as well as had him test ride the bike with it off and it runs fine and is back to normal as we have no problems. My question is i found a box diagram i was gonna give my mechanic to use a reference to ensure its hooked up right but saw it was for a i do believe 06 k9 and i have a 05 pitbull. Just wanted to know if someone could send me a diagram of how its to be installed. Or let me know of any tricks of what needs to be done to correctly install them cause im sure someone had to came across a similar problem so on and so forth cause its been a week now of no riding and its killing me and i dont want to just waste a 300 dollar oil cooler. Thanks

First thing that comes to mind for me is he is installing the oil lines in reverse. Does the cooler have a check valve? If so then that's your obstruction.

Might consider another mechanic if thats the reason. Why do you need an oil cooler in Ohio????

That i do not know ill have to check it tomorrow. The mechanic is really good he just dont see alot of dogs hes basically a harley only mechanic but the same principles apply and yet hes never seen a bike have this problem. But i and my old man do alot of out of state riding down south and after bike week the last two years and reading how it helps with overheating issues thought it might be a good idea.....plus ya always finds something to buy with extra money.

However will note that the bikes oil pressure is fine at idle but rises and maxes out under load. The oil cooler also does not get hot even the slightest either.

Ok, I understand that but oil does have to be at a certain level of degree. I've put 60000 miles on two BD's living in Southern Kalifornia, Arizona and Nevada in the hottest weather in the US and never needed one.

I do believe though that the cooler is being installed backwards and the check valve is obstructing flow.

You 05 should have oil pressure around 5-10 lbs hot and run up to 30 when cruising down the hiway. 05's and above have the Hi-output pumps.

Ill shit if your right thats one thing i was not aware of. I was told that it didnt matter what line went to either port of the oil cooler as its just passing oil threw it but that would make sence if it were hooked up backwards and preventing oil flow which would build up pressure and force it out the gaskets and etc. Thanks ill check that out for sure tomorrow greatly appreciate it.

Some coolers have check valves to prevent oil from gavity draining back into the motor that has a dry sump. :D

I'd put dollars to donuts that the cooler is installed backwards as Ray said..

Come to find out today it wasnt the oil cooler installed backwards but another bigdog owner that brought his bike in today that helped us figure it out. After double checking over the oil cooler and the lines and making sure that the cooler wasnt installed wrong or that the lines were switched. Another bigdog owner came to the shop today with a oil cooler on his bike and after shooting the shit with him he said he had the same problem on his bike when he had his motor work and oil cooler installed because most including my mechanic when they go to put the rocker gaskets back on the bike if there not familiar with bigdogs they assume they have s&s rocker boxs since its a s&s motor and put a s&s gasket on. Well my bike has tp rocker boxes so after switching the gaskets everything works fine which i find to be a lil odd but hey whatever works....However the fellow dog owner said that bigdog had a recall on the tp rockers and said i should get ahold of them and get the s&s ones sent out to me. Just curious if you guys knew what he was talking about and if it was free and if it was beneficial or necessary. Thanks

if i am correct, it is on a case by case basis. if there is no wear in the rocker box/valve guides, to replace would be on your dime.
