Oil Pressure

Yesterday I put an oil pressure gauge in the tappet screen port and after the install the gauge read Zero and the red light is lit on the tach. Any Ideaers fellers???? Does that spring length affect anything? I must note that I am also having trouble with my speedo not working properly but I think that is another thread. Any help would be appreciated. I have now replaced the gauge with the original tappet screen plug and the light is still on. WTF?

Should have put the gauge in the oil pressure sending unit port. If you install it in the port in the pump housing, there is a spring there that sets the oil system oil pressure. That spring length is important. Could have damaged the oil sending unit switch also if you remove it.

that spring under the tappet plug holds pressure on the screen...to keep it seated in place.. the spring that makes pressure is in the oil pump.. from what I understand.. did you clean out the screen? any trash in it?

I did remove the screen and cleaned it only cause I was there. It really didn't need to be cleaned though.

did you unhook any ol lines? if the vent line dosent seal up correct it can cause oil pressure issues.. sound odd that it was working before & just quit due to adding a gauge..

If this is where you located the gauge all you need to do is make sure, 1 the screen is clean.... and remember screen first then spring then your adapter. You should feel some (but not a lot) of spring tension when you start to thread the adapter in.. :2thumbs:
Disregard the pink arrow, that is a sender i installed for a temp guage.

no oil lines were disconnected. I couldn't nuts with it too much last night due to keeping the neighbors up. I am just stumped!

I always put the screen on top of or inside of the spring. How else would you remove it?

Thanks N8KAM, I had re-installed it the same way which now I learn is upside down all this time. I will flip it over when I get home and see if this doesn't take care of my problem.

I maybe wrong but I don't think you are going to get and accurate pressure reading on fo the tappet screen. You need to tap into the port where the oil pressure sending unit is located. Put your gauge there and if your red light is still on and you have pressure on the guage then probably you sending unit.

I am interested in the psi after the screen up to the head.... I would think this would show early signs of psi problems or a dirty screen

And yes if you have psi on the gauge and the light is still on look for a wiring or sender problem

Well I installed the tappet screen correctly and put the gauge on and I have pressure on the gauge and no red light so that took care of it. Thanks for all your help gentlemen.
