Pinging

Greetings fellow riders, Yesterday I was out for a short ride around town when I noticed that when I wrapped on the throttle there was a sound of what I thought was a couple of pebbles hitting my fins, so I assume this is pinging. I had the cylinders cut to .4889 I believe as rocommended by S&S and added the 600 cam 640 springs. It runs really strong but I am not comfortable with this new sound, that being one of a kinda whind from the cam area also . The guy who did the work is 3 hours away but I plan to get back out his way for a checkup as soon as time allows. I did added the spike to the setup so I am not sure if that would have made a difference, but for the sake of giving all the info, I added a pre filter to the crankcase breather hose. I do run the 91 octane in it and compression is 10.5:1 now. But I want to be able to verify that information myself. Thanks for your attention guys in advance. Going to check the plugs now.

Did you change ignition and/or ignition timing?

Single spike or dual spike?

What color where the plugs Black, Brown, Tan or Dk. White?

Are you running a the stock ignition?

Have you tried 93 (or higher) octane? Was the problem the same?

Does it only occur when you reach max revs quickly or does the pinging occur regardless of how fast you get there.

RIDE IT HARD!!!
I run 93 with lucase octane boost. running a spike in the up position will not get the right air flow. it will have a tendency to pull the air back out of the carb as your speed increases. had that problem myself. just my .02

Zips -- worth trying a octane booster (any bike shop should carry them to get you up to 97 or higher) or a tank of AV gas at the airport (100 or 110 octane). I suspect your decking and compression may be too much for the stock ignition to deal with. Have you considered a aftermarket ignition like a Crane (back on the street now) or Dyna 2000K? They have a VOES sensor option to compensate for the pinging...

Hope this makes sense -- I've had like six beers....
