2000 bulldog, it has the starter button right on the starter, when i push the button i have to kinda play with it to engage, push in, release a little and most times it works. Is there any adjustment, maintenance etc that can be done to it? Is it the “better way” then the button on the handlebars?

I just like my Freedom
The "slam" button on the starter is USUALLY there as a backup in case the handlebar switch fails. Pull the slam button off(after disconnecting the battery) and clean the contacts. Probably corroded a bit. Handlebar switches are the best option. On the 2000's you prolly have Harley controls. Replaceable, repairable.

My handlebar button doesnt work, the kill switch does but not the starter button. And the controls look like hd to me but didnt know if they were or not. I have some wires not connected so need to look into them, one that looks important is a red one with a female spade it was hanging down by the starter.

I have a SPYKE Slam Button and it is adjustable. Inside is an allen head screw with a lock nut to adjust the throw of the button. They can (over time) come loose and cause a problem. I would do as HMAN suggests and remove and inspect to be sure all is well. Clean or new contacts is a good idea as well.

Yeah if your bike is a 2000 you have Harley switches. You can get a replacement at JP Cycles.

Ok another question, how much of a pain is it to pull the solenoid off of the starter? I got the push button working, found the wire for the handlebar control button but powering up the solenoid doesnt do anything.
