pushrod adjustment

A little help please??

I want to adjust my pushrods and have been studying Chacha's how to. Its the bit about shortening and extending the pushrods that I'm not clear on. Please look at the below

10. When you get to a rod you can work on, be sure to collapse the lifter nut not anything else. You want to get the rod assembly finger loose. Once that is done, I hold the rod and begin to extend (turn to left) the lifter nut until the rod just becomes just unturnable, but no more. This is the "Zero lash" point discussed in the procedures.

11. From this point, I extend the lifter nut three turns (or 18 flats - nut has six sides 3x6=18). You can go four turns, but I've been happy with three. What you are doing is trying to extend the pushrod assembly into the midpoint of the lifters adjustment range.

Ok - to shorten the pushrod are you turning the nut with the green arrow (after loosening the lock nut of course) and which way are you turning it (clockwise or counter clockwise if you are looking down on the nut)? Are you holding the pushrod still whilst doing this?

Thanks gents

Counter clockwise (if you're looking down at the nut) to shorten, yes, you hold the push rod.

Just like looking down at a bolt with a nut on it. righty-tighty, lefty-loosy. :2thumbs:

yep :2thumbs:, but it's not really a nut lee, it's actually the adjuster part of the push rod. But it does have a jam nut on top of it though. :D :2thumbs::2thumbs::2thumbs:

Thanks Dead I really appreciate it. You can see my confusion because Chacha says in post 10 that you turn to the left to extend the pushrod but you're saying go that way to shorten it. Thanks Dead.

No :nono:, if your looking down from the top, you'll be turning it Clockwise to lengthen and counter Clockwise to shorten. :2thumbs:

Chacha would be correct also. If you are turning it right to left from the side view, then from the top you'd be turning it Clockwise to extend or lengthen. :2thumbs:

Boy all of this top-side and side-side viewing is making me dizzy.

Lee the nut with the "red" arrow is nothing more than a jam/lock nut. I keep my wrench on the bottom portion of the rod "green" arrow and turn the top nut (the very top one) to extend or retract the rod length. Turning it clockwise collapses it.

Lee -- glad this is cleared up for you. I tend to be literal and try not to over think a description...

So if I say I'm squeezing the nipple on the left in a picture it means;

- The women with the nice rack is facing me
- I'm squeezing the nipple on my left which is her right breast
- I'm clearly drunk since I would normally never take a picture of such a thing and write it up for a lot like you...

I got this done yesterday - all makes much more sense when you actually get in there and do it. Thanks for the write up Chach - very good :2thumbs:
