Repeat Problems with Valve Spring Collar and Coil Cover Motor Mount Breaking...Help!

I have an 07 K9 that keeps breaking valve spring collars on the intake valve on the front cylinder. Luckily each time I have caught it before the collar coming to pieces and dropping a valve. Each time alot of excess top end chatter and when I inspect the collar has three cracks in it barely holding on. Any suggestions to why this is recurring? I do operate the bike on the high side of the RPMs at times.

Also, this is the second time that the coil cover/motor mount has broke. It keeps breaking around the mounting hole at the top of the rear cylinder mounting point. The mount breaking is independant of when the collar cracks.

Any help or suggestions, rants or thinking out loud would be appreciated.

Sounds like your getting some serious frame flexion. Have you pulled your tank and looked the frame over thouroughly?
What do you mean by the "High Side" are you red lining continuously?
Have you gone throught the mounting bolts and checked for loose connections and proper torques?
It is possible that the bike was not assembled properly and some things are out of alignment and causing stress at critical mounting points.
Do you have the TP rocker boxes or S&S?

I have S&S everything in my motor, Frame checks out. After the first time the mount broke, everything was checked and torqued. As last time before it broke (the mount) you could hear chatter which was the top camel toe bolt to the frame moving.

Yes, the bike has been redlined a few times. However, my cam and heads are rated for 7,000 RPM and my rev limiter is 6250 RPM. Thats why I am stumped.......I have heard others with the same problem of breaking the coil/motor mount after they have upgraded their motors. So I am looking at getting an old style mount with the reinforced top mount and hopefully it will remedy that situation.

But the valve spring collar is whats really bugging me!

There has to be some type of an alignment issue there with regards to the valve. A mechanic can simply throw in new parts but someone better is going to have to look at that motor. Maybe you should try emailing S&S support and see if they can give you some advice:

I agree with Kaptain! Something with the head/valve. S&S would be the people too contact, great tech support.

Update..........found out the issue! It was a bad intake valve that was inproperly QC'd from the factory. The keeper recess slot is .050 less than it should be from the end of the valve stem. This in return allowed the steel collar to rise above the end of the valve stem when fully assembled. Thus, when the roller rocker is at full lift, the shoulders of the rocker arm on each side of the roller bearing are coming in contact with the steel collar. Over time the collar weakens and breaks.

S&S offered nothing except Sorry! You would think after all the BS and money spent a guy would get more than a sorry. But, live and learn......trust no one and spec all your parts.

S&S told you that because they didn't assemble your motor. BDM did all the topends till 08 or so. Now they use fully assembled motors.
Sorry to hear of your problems.

Thanks for the empathy........I wish I would have found this out a set of pistons, 2 valves, and 4 steel collars ago. Argh! :bang:
