Sepating the lower and upper fork legs??

In following some of the previous HOW TO's posted I have gotten myself stuck (again).

I have come to a bypass and can't seem to get around a fix. I am trying to separate the upper and lower fork legs and can't seem to get them to come apart. In Gas Man's Fork Removal post there is a reference to an allen key going in to the bottom of the lower fork. Is there a bolt that needs to be unscrewed to separate the two "legs". I have been trying to get the allen screw to turn but can't get it to move....and I am not sure if that is even supposed to be moving.

I attached a photo as a reference shot. Does it make sense what I am referring to? Any help would be appreciated.

You are on the right tract, that allen screw holds the Damper tube which is inside the upper upper tube. Once you take that screw out you should be able to pull them apart. Not easy but easier than with that dam allen screw in there. :D

Thanks Carlos! I had to put some serious muscle into getting those screws out BUT they did come out! Thanks.

Cshores I did the same as you and I ended up putting vise grips on the end of the allen key for leverage. Make sure when you assemble that bolt back you get the new copper crush washer. Don't reuse the one you took off because it will leak on you.

might want to invest in a set of 3/8 drive allen sockets for your ratchet. get better leverage that way.

I usually use a small socket on the end of a extension for leverage. Note to self...Pick up a set of metric T-Handle allen wrenches...6mm

You are welcome, glad I was able to help. As mention later on to insure you change out the crush washer and use some black RTV on the treads that will keep it from leaking. :2thumbs:

Is this the same Allen (metric) that's removed to drain the fork oil?
