Speedo won't work after oil change

Ok here is my situation.
I changed the engine oil and now speedo won't read.
It does the sweep at power up and everything else works fine but it reads zero while in motion.
What could I have messed up or just coincidence?
I did remove the crank sensor to clean it.
What do do next not sure how to diagnose if it is speedo or ehc.
Going to go ohm the wires now.
Thanks for any input.

That Sucks!

Removing the cam sensor shouldn't have any affect on speedo.

Sounds like power and ground are connected to get the sweep. Check the speedo pickup harness connection underneath side of RH belt cover or other wires near there.

The speedo (green) signal wire goes from the speedo head directly to the pickup and also goes to the EHC to be monitored. Check continuity from speedo sender to speedo with an ohm meter. Could be the connectors, sender or rubbed shorted wire. The pickup has a connector at main harness and the speedo has one in the speedo cup and another to the main harness, don't know where (under tank or seat). Then the main harness plugs into the EHC with two main connectors. Check these points for continuity through green wire. This diagram might help.

Weird I just ohmed the signal wire and was good. Connections were tight. Put back together and it works.
I guess it could have been a loose connection but I'm not sure.
I guess time will tell.
Would a low battery cause this condition? I did start it a few times to service it.

Sounds like connector problems? What exactly do you mean by "put it back together".

Poor battery level could cause some EHC problems and possible speedo head glitch. A good battery should read about 12.8volts sitting. I keep mine on a float charger when not riding. My Battery Tender Jr. doesn't work on my bike so get a good float charger for AGM type batteries.

Did you disconnect any connectors when troubleshooting and reconnect again. Could be connections. Get some dielectric grease from Radio Shack and put some between the connector plugs to help lube pins and seal contacts.

Let us know.

Wouldn't ride anything else!

I would check for the battery being low volts. Mine has been doing that lately. Sometimes i have to cycle the key and restart 3 times. My new Braille battery i installed was a dud and waiting for a new one on warranty.

Check and see if the speedometer pickup on top of the transmission is hooked up. If you had the side covers off it is easy to get unplugged. I would follow the speedometer sensor pickup back first seeing how it sends the signal to the speedo.

I disconnected the connectors to ohm the wires. They seemed tight. It's working good now.
I'm thinking that starting it and shutting it off about 6 times just moving it around the garage made the battery weak.

Why do you think it's the battery, did you charge the battery just before the speedo started working?

Still get some dielectric grease from Radio Shack and put some between the connector plugs to help lube pins and seal contacts.

No I took it for about a3 mile ride with speedo not working Came home shut it off, started it back up and went around the block and it worked.
That's why I figured the battery may have been low and charged up on my ride.

Possibly charged, but I doubt it. 3 miles and around the block aint much really.

A good battery should read about 12.8 volts sitting off the charger an hour. I would still put dielectric grease in the connectors esspecially the trans speedo sender connector. Sounds like the speedo started working after playing with the connectors. Won't hurt!

I keep mine on a float charger when not riding. My Battery Tender Jr. doesn't work on my bike so get a good float charger for AGM type batteries.

These bikes should always be on a float charger when not being riden.

Hot weather here in AZ can kill a NEW battery in two years when not on a storage charger.

All dielectric greased up and working good. I did the ehc when I got the bike but did not do other connectors at that time. I plan on painting this winter so I'll get the rest when I take the tins off.
I have been using my sears battery charger on the 2 amp matinence setting.
I have used this one for my bikes and quads for years.
My battery is a braille, should I be using a different charger when she sits?
Best recommendation?
Thanks again for the helpful info.
Its nice to be able to bounce ideas around. My wife just rolls her eyes at me. lol

The Sears charger may be okay but I would read the manual or search online and check that it is a FLOAT MODE charger that's compatable with a AGM type batteries.

Both of my Battery Tender Juniors just don't seem to work correctly on my new Interstate MC battery. It stays in charge mode and gets real hot, never going to FLOAT MODE. So I use my other ? and it works perfectly.

The BT Jr's work on my cars just fine though while in storage.
