I'm due to go back to the dealer on the next available riding day, and my issue is this...
Since I had the bike delivered, I noticed the bike sputters when I'm at 2800-3000 RPM in either 2nd or 3rd gear...but once I'm in 4th gear, it never happens. I'm not too familiary with fixing bikes, but I have a feeling this has something to do with jetting, which I have no idea as to what it means. The dealer mentioned its something they can fix while I wait, but is this something easy I can tweak on my own, and if so how  ? Thanks in advance

I have:
V&H BR
M&M Breather (my choke system is a knob with I pull up, and twist..is this normal?)

Do you know if they changed the jets when they installed the exhaust. If so what size jets did they put in. Sounds like you need to change the main jet up one size. If you want to do it yourself, the main jet is changed by taking out the bowl drain screw and then taking a small flat head screw driver through that hole straight up in there. unscrew and then screw the new on in.

I would think they would have done that since they've been around for quite sometime...but you never know. :job:

Prepare yourself for the visit to the dealer by doing a little reading.

Copy and print the carburetor Installation and Jetting Instructions from the S&S web site at http://www.sscycle.com/modules/instruction/uploads/51-1012.pdf

Focus on the section titled "Adjusting Carburetor," on page 16. This will give you a fine head start.

Soon you'll be tweaking your own carb and talkin' jet size with the best of 'em.

2800-3000 is probably where it moves from inter to main jet - you may be able to fix this by tweaking your accelerator pump or changing the air bleed (a larger one will delay the transition although I doubt you would do this) - I'm assuming you got an S&S carb here

"gift that keeps on giving..." THANKS P8RIOT, I really appreciate the literature.

Aren't they all S&S carbs? I have an 07 K-9...

Chances are, your intermediate jet isn't right. Adjusting a carb is easy but it can just as easily cause you hours of frustration. A couple of things you can do yourself that could tell you what the problem may be.

First look at the spark plugs after the bike is warmed up. Check the plug color The insulator should be a tan or lite brown The ground part of the plug (with the electrode) should be black but not sooty. the electrode sould be clean and possibly a bit whitish from the bend in the electrode to the base of the plug.

Most important, both plugs should look the same.

If the plug color isn't balanced (one plug white and the other black and sooty), you could have an intake leak between the intake manifold and the front or rear head. The plug with the lightest color would be the cylinder with the problem.

If your bike stumbles while crusing at a steady speed, this is a possibility.

If it is stumbling under acceleration, it could be your accelerator pump adjustment. These big motors don't require much pump 1 to 1 1/2 truns out from seatedis usually plenty.

Not enough acclerator pump, and the bike will pop thru the carb under acceleration too much and it will hesitate and blow black smoke out of the exhaust.

It's not likely that there is a main jet problem at that rpm range.

Almost forgot, the enrichener (choke) you have is the old style that S&S has used forever. Works fine, lasts a long time.
Hope this helps!

Thanks, but now I'm sure I have to bring the bike back to the dealer.

They definately jetted your bike. I know those guys well and they wouldn't let the Dog out without jetting. I think your problem is with the spike air breather. Even thou it's pointed upwards, those things don't work. You may also need to adjust your accelerator pump. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for that reassurance Rain, I think I'll have them test ride it so they can get to the bottom of it....

...Just trying to give him all the possiblities.
No worries, Rainman - me too.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about these things, though I would be the first to admit that sometimes they could be problematic.
