Stalling while riding

Started about a month ago. While I was riding on the interstate doing about 85 it stalked out on me so I pulled over turned key off the back on and it started back up. Did it two more times that night then was ok for about a week then happened again. One time it did it when I turned it off then back on again and started it I noticed my tach wasn't working so I turned it off and back on and started it again and tach worked. Checked wires at battery all were tight. Do u think it might be the cam sensor cutting out. Let me say thanks in advance for any help

Oh yeah one more thing it was backing firing through the exhaust when I was pulling over to restart it. I don't know if that means anything.

Have you tried wiggling the key to see if it shuts off. I would start with the ignition switch by wiggling the key, vibration in the ignition can be causing it to shut down. When this happens do your lights stay on or does it kill everything. If you lights are staying on, it could be your cam sensor like you mentioned. FYI, there have been several threads on here on that very same issue. You may want to do a search and see what other have done to resolve the same issue you are having.

Pull your EHC plugs and fill them with dielectric grease. Same thing happened to me a couple years ago one night. Fill them at every service and not a problem since. :2thumbs:

Filled all the plugs with grease including the ehc plugs when I put everything back together I started it up to make sure i didn't f anything up and it fired right up. Put it on tender went to bed went to ride it to work today tried to start it and it just clicks.seems like the starter want to turn but then just clicks. The green wire that goes to the starter I put grease in that plug could that b it mayb not making a good ground. I havnt had a problem starting it until I did all that. It would just stall out on me every once in awhile. Any suggestions

How old is your battery? Check your circuit breaker to make sure it's not tripped. Load test your battery and check to make sure your charging system is working. You should see 13.5-14.5 volts at 2k.

Battery is a 6 months old my cb has been changed over to the fuse and I checked that and it was good. Do u think that grease on the green wire has any thing to do with it. I'm going to take battery to get load tested tomorrow and clean contacts in starter tonight and clean the grease out of that ground wire I'll try that first thanks for your reply Vegas

You did use dielectric grease right? Dielectric grease is ok on all power and ground wires. There was a voltage regulator recall that very likely effects your bike as well.

Yeah that's the kind of grease I'm using it sucks that it started fine until I did that. Wonder what I could have done to fuck it up. I'll clean all my connections and make sure everything is tight when I get home tonight. It would have to start this 4 days before I go to thunder beach WTF

so i have come to the conclusion that my starter has craped out. i read a thread that had the same thing going on that mine did. smoke and all. cleaned contacts in solenoid, tried the jumper wire, made sure battery was fully charged, rocked bike back and forth while in gear to make sure nothing was sticking, cleaned all connection and made sure they were all tight and none of that work only other i can think of is starter is done.and i noticed oil all over the bottom of starter and my frame.i started to pull it but cant get to that last bolt on the bottom corner. the terminal the green wire goes on in the the way to get a straight shot at it. so i have to get a long allen socket to get to it. and then run it by the starter shop tomorrow. wonder how long it will take to rebuild it. how long has it took to get one rebuilt that the guys on here have had rebuilt. hope only a day because I'm leaving for thunder beach Thursday night.

Mike,
Oil on the starter is definitely an issue, but did you ever check the voltage of the battery while trying to start the bike? Just because it's only 6 months old means absolutely nothing. You said you were going to have the battery load tested. Did you ever get around to doing that? I would.

well the stater is a goner.:bang: my friend at the place that rebuilds starters tested it and said it was smoking and got hot quick and was turning really slow. he doesn't know yet if he can fix it. has to open it up. said if something was fuse together (cant remember what he called them) theres noting he could do. i hope he can or it looks like I'll be going to thunder beach without my bike which would fucking blow. well my friend just called me and said that here aint shit he can do. said oil got in there and fried everything. looks like i'm screwed trying to get one overnighted off ebay but havent heard back on that. and shovelheadkicker is wating on some to come back from his rebuilder. damn it

That sucks, but it's nice to know what your problem is. I see those on Ebay all the time. Seems like if you emailed the seller, they could overnight you one. :bang: Sometimes I get sellers that respond ASAP, other times whenever they get around to it. Good luck getting that dog running for your event.

i know that your talking about there. them things will nickel and dime you to death. i don't know how they came up with that term. i never paid a nickel or a dime for anything i put on my truck. seems like everything cost $500 or more. but its all worth it to me. i just wish i didn't have to jump through hoops before i go on vacation. but better it happened here then down there. I'll post when i get it all back together. thanks for all the help guys.
