Starter Issue

Hello,

It’s been a while since I’ve been on the site.

With that said, my starter on my 02 Pit Bull is acting strange.

The jack shaft spins when the starter button is engaged, but the pinion gear doesn’t move onto the ring gear to start the engine.

Any thoughts on what could cause this issue?

Thanks in advance.

The starter on my 2006 Mastiff does not have a jack shaft so I don't know much about the 02 staters, however from what I have read here in the forum the problem with your starter is a broken jack shaft being the reason it just spins and never engages the pinion gear. Do a search on staters and find out what options you have. I would buy a rebuilt one if available or send it out Curtis (WSW) to have it rebuilt. Someone will come along and give you more scoop than on repairs or replacement.

Broken spring? 1/4" jackshaft bolt came loose? Or the lockplate sheared?
