Trans fluid level

This may be a dumb question...
when you check your transmission fluid level, the bike should be up to operating temp and standing straight up...
the fluid should be between the two lines...
my question is the manual says pull the stick out, wipe it off and put it back in but just where the threads align but don't tighten down...
I've always hand tighten the dipstick then loosened it and checked the fluid..
How does every1 else check their fluid????

thanks.....
when I check mine the right way, it's at the bottom line,
how much fluid should I add???
I'm pretty paranoid about this cause I had a leak and it was going into the primary and ended up burning the bearings up in the trans...
