New to this site, not new to riding. This is my first Big Dog and I am loving the new ride, however I am having a few problems. I have a shifter problem that I think is just in need of adjustment. Anyone familiar with the transmission linkage and it' adjustment ranges?? 2006 K9 chopper

thanks for the reply. I can put it into first gear and the shifter stays down, shifting to higher gear and the shifter stays up, it does allow for a third shift. Plus the bar over the primary case moves side to side about a quarter of an inch. How much play is in that bar?? When the bike is turned off I can manually shift through the gears even get it into neutral, but not while it's running. I hope that's more info.

disconnect the shift linkage at the shift lever (coming out of tranny inbd of primary and check that it moves to center after you push (downshift) and pull (upshift) it has springs that keep it center. if this is Ok try the lube as suggested in previous replys.

There was a recall on the heim joints for my 06 mastiff. Might want to check with your dealer. Did you buy the k9 new?

Mine did the same thing 2006 K-9. I took the shift rod off of the bike. wraped a towel around it so an not to damage it, and clamped it in a vise. put a long 5/16 bolt and nut in the heim and spun it with and electric drill- cooling it and oiling it until it spun free( don't overheat it- plastic injection in heim- at least mine was). You should be good to go after that. Or get some new heims as others have said.

you must have either rode in the rain or washed your bike. the rod ends dry out really easy when wet. use some white lithium grease on them and work them back and forth until it creeps in. you should be able to twist the rod about a 1/4 turn each way. fixed mine right up, got mine wet for the first time in two years and seized up right away.

Buy new heim joints they are not that expensive and be sure to get the ones that are all metal no teflon insert bearings. When you install the new ones be sure to center the linkage adjustment in the middle of the toe shifter travel.

what rrruff said

and if you are struggling to find neutral when the bike is running and you can't adjust it out then drop it in there before the bike stops moving (easiest for me) or give a quick zip on the throttle

The rod ends are plastic lined and are stiff from the factory. They will hang up the linkage when the get a bit dry and cause the shift pedal to remain up or down after a shift. Lubing them will only work for a short time. You need to contact the dealer and have them get the new replacement ends which are much looser and won't stick the pedal up or down but will return to center.

I shut mine off in-gear and put it in neutral afterwards.

mine did!
