voltage regulator

i have an 07 bulldog, that appears to be in need of a voltage regulator. the shop manual states that you shouldn't use a shunt regulator on a bigdog. what is a shunt regulator? also, any ideas on what is the correct regulator for my application?

did you run the test with a volt meter & sure that the vr is bad. I thought mine was bad, but while running the test I cleaned the connection where the vr goes into the engine block and it turned out that the problem was a bad connection. Sorry, don't know what a shunt vr is or which is the correct vr. Good luck, somebody on this forum should know though.
