What is this clip for?

Hello
As a few may remember I started disassembly\cleaning and polishing of my 04 bigdog bulldog about a year or so ago. I had to take an extended break as life got in the way and I stepped away from the forum for awhile to deal with lifes little problems, not least of which was my terminally ill mother. Mercifully she passed away yesterday 1\31\2010 and while there is still much to be done, a great weight has been lifted from the family and I find quiet reflection time while working on my motorcycle. Now the question....What is this clip for? Any guesses? Ideas? I have almost everything bagged and tagged and this showed up in a random bag of parts and I have no idea what it is for. As you can see I have the engine almost assembled (provided I remember how to post pics) and I really don't want to have to start over. The old lifter is for size reference only. The trans is on the frame and the shocks are mounted, but that's it. I am hoping this is for something not assembled yet and not in the motor, but even though reassembly started over a year ago i really dont remeber a groove for this to have been snapped on to. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It measures out @ 1 3/4" in diameter.

Engine Assembly so far:

I'm sorry for your loss.
I can't tell the size of that clip with the pics, but I'd check your exhaust pipe to see if it is one of the exhaust flange retainers.

Both flange clips present and accounted for in their bag....this one is about the same size, but about 4-5 times thicker. I know this is a shot in the dark, but maybe someone knows off hand what it's for. Thanks for all the positive thoughts guys! :2thumbs:

Sorry to hear about your mother Ray. She's in peace now.

I believe that clip is a Piston wrist-pin clip. Did you rebuild the top end?

Thanks Ray!
Yes I did and all 4 of the old ones are still present and accounted for. I added another pic above that shows it with a measuring tape, sorry I did not represent it very well. The clip measures 1 3/4" in diameter and it's about 1/8"
or 3/16" thick. I am afraid it's some sort of bearing retainer clip that I forgot, but I can't find a home for it.

I'm at a lose then. If anything comes to mind I'll let you know. Maybe one of our mechanics on there will chime in and help out.

My Guess!!

Glad you can find some peace now.
My guess is it's a quasi-cylindrical semi-circular metallic left handed Clevis Retainer.:eek::D:job:
Hope this brightens your day!
Wish I knew what the heck it really is...:confused:
Best Wishes

looks similar to my 03 clutch hub retainer.
That ring looks damaged to me, looks like one end is broken?

THAT WOULD BE A TIMKEN BEARING SHIM---IT GOES BETWEEN THE 2 TIMKENS IN THE LEFT CASE-IN THE PICS I SEE THE OUTER TIMKEN ISN'T PLACED YET-PROPER SIZE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CHECKED PRIOR TO ASSEMBLY FOR ENDPLAY------------JOHN

I was thinking along that line, but too much time has lapsed since disassembly. I have read a few vague references to it,but what can I do now? I disassembled, checked all the bearings and races for pitting etc. Everything still looks new so I was going to reassemble as is although I did get new bearing sets incase I messed something up. Can I still install it and check the endplay after everything is installed and torqued down? I'm no motorcycle tech, but I have worked on cars for the last 30 years and I do understand bearing pre load, end play etc. Thanks for the help! :2thumbs:

Ding,Ding we have a ***Winner*** John\beezer was right it is the timken main bearing spacer. I checked my notes and remeasured the spacer and it is the same .081 I measured when I took it apart. I usually tape\tag\bag or mark stuff like that, but somehow this one got by me. Thanks for the help and all the kind words.....I really do appreciate it. :)
