Tinkling Sounds

I had the same tinkling noise and it drove me crazy. I finally read on this site somewhere that it may be the belt drive which didn't make sense to me at all. Anyway, I went to Lowes, bought some DRY LUBE, put the bike on a jack, and as I spun the rear tire sprayed the inside of the belt with dry lube. I haven't had the tinkling sound since. Not sure what I fixed, but it worked.
Crazy, aye. THIS bears pursuit.
Was talking to the local wrench, he had been on the phone with BDM getting set up as an authorized service cener. Part of the conversation was about "chirping" noises from the steel belt sprockets. The ivory tower is supposed to be coming out with teflon coated sprockets as a fix.

Since Big Dogs don't tinkle, maybe it's chirping that I'm hearing - will definitely look into this...

CHIHUASBIGDOG,

"Death by Snow Blower" superceded my efforts to fing the VIP Bell, but I did talk to the service writer at Steel Dreams (Honda Something now), and she said that the primary tends to loosen up somewhere in the 2500-3000 mile range. And it kind of makes sense to me. The selling dealer confirmed that the primary was spot on at the 2500 check up before the bike came home. I started noticing it as the miles accumlated after that, last Summer.

With new inspection cover gasket in hand, I am going to pursue that line of thought before getting onthe road again.

But not tonight. It's about 8 F. and light snow...

PLEASE, if you come up with something, put it on the forum!

dont think its the primary, and nothing to do with it. 15 days ago I changed my final drive belt, and in the SURGERY doing it  , I take down all the primary and carcass. First, the primary was loose and of course with noises coming from down there, I adjust it and BINGO no sounds.... Im mentioning this, cause the FUCKIN TINKLING was before and after I ve adjusted the primary!!!

think is something in the upper front.... MY HEAD NEXT TO THE TANK FOR ABOUT 4 MILES CANT LIE!!! :bang:

keep you informed.

I have the same thing, seems like it may be coming from the ignition cover? :skep:
Well your ignition cover? You mean your cam cover? Cause your ignition is under your seat.

That's great. Before you pull your tank. Open your gas cap and check the little metal overfill tube in the cap neck. That has a weld and comes loose allot on these bikes. If that's it. You have a few options.

call BDM and see if they will help to get it welded back.
JBWeld it in place so it don't rattle
cut it off below the filler neck

Realize that it doesn't go anywhere on our bikes (Cali bike maybe). The plug under the tank is the other end of that tube. Hence it goes no where.

Sorry, meant coil cover... will look into it further next week when I do the 2500 mile service and finally install a bunch of goodies (HID, oil coolers, Scorpio alarm, Cruise-Mate, forward control extensions, Dyna beads, oil pressure gauge).

Check the 2 mounting bolts that screw into the top of the heads and the big bolt that goes thru the frame under the tank. They are all known for coming loose and should be part of your regular checks.

As I said... there is a little metal tube in there.

Not that it realates to your issue but I cut it down for my new gas cap, just to ensure we're talkin about the same thing

The metal tube is spot welded to the raw metal filler piece in the gas tank. But the weld breaks loose and then the tube starts rattle agaist the filler piece.

Thought maybe a picture follow up would help.

Just a bit of info:

The tube is a vent that goes to the Charcoal canister on all Kalifornia sold bikes. Mine had it but most remove all that canister crap. In Kalifornina it's a C.A.R.B. (California Air Resource Board) requirement that all motor, gas, oil and air gets routed to the canister.

Guess it's cheaper to make all tanks with the tube and most of you see that's it's just plugged unless you have a Kalifornia model!!

On my bike I have a black plastic tube coming from that fitting opposite the Petcock and I just route it back behind and under the oil bag. Guess I should plug it but then I would have to get a vented gas cap! I did the same with the carb overflow that went to the canister and now just goes to the ground like the rest of you have.

Ok, good to know. I always thought it was an overfill drain or somin. Either way its not used by many...right.

Nah, on this one I have been around here and its happened to others including a michigan boy Alhall.

Yeah, certainly some of these are the reasons why I switched. The more R&D a company does on their bikes, the aftermarket stuff, ect... the better the product. But I won't get into that again here and now.

If you have a set of 90* needle nose pliers you may be able to get in there under the filler neck, bend it inward and out of the way. Won't hurt much after that.

I have an 09 Wolf...my first BigDog...and noticed the noise described above. It seems to be more noticeable once bike warmed up, and when running between 30-55 mph...when you back off the throttle you can really hear it. I agree it is on the left side. Service folks at local BDM dealer said BDM motors are loud and just something you get used to. Not sure I am buying that.

Which dealership? Maybe somebody can give input on that dealers creditability.

FOUND THE NOISE!

Hello,
I have an 09' K9 and as soon as I turned 1,100 miles, I started to hear the most annoying tinking squeak that I had ever heard coming from some where on the left side of the bike, it was driving me F@#king nuts.

while driving down the road one day I trying to find the source when I noticed I could turn the top motor mount bolt under the tank by hand. When I tried to tighten it up with hand tools, it would tighten up a little but the bolt and nut would still spin. Once I did that while goin down the road I could feel the bolt vibrate at low speeds under power, as soon as I let off the throttle it would stop and the noise was gone. We took it off with an impact wrench, put on new loctite and tightened the hell out of it with an impact and poof the noise was gone, THANK GOD.

maybe this will help.

I had the same noise and it was driving me nuts

Open your fuel tank and look at the vent tube which is welded in a hole in the filler

The weld had broken on mine and the vent pipe vibrates in the tank and it made the noise you described

Dealer removed the vent tube as Big Dog authorized this procedure.

Now there is no more noises

Hope this helps
