05 Clutch report

In getting ready for my Sturgis trip I decided to replace the clutch. I had experienced some slippage on my Redwood Run trip with Glenda on the back with a loaded pack. Could have been just out of adjustment but to be on the safe side......
With 52,000 miles on the bike I figured it would most certainly be worn out.
I conferred with Dogvet who provided me with all the specs in checking thickness of pressure plate and friction and steel clutch plates.
So I contacted Nelson and found out that to replace the BDM clutch was more expensive than replacing it with the Bandit including Carrier and bearing.

Anyway, the are already "How-To" on installing this clutch so wanted to just let all of you know what I found inside my primary after pulling the BDM clutch and some other observations.

First off is the Carrier that has failed with a few of you. Mine was in great shape and had no sign of stress fractures, breakage or rubbing.

As with most here I had an issue finding the right size socket for the motor sprocket so said the hell with it and pulled the clutch basket without removing it.

My transmission shaft was heavily gunked up with crap so had to use lots of engine gunk and a wire brush to get it all cleaned up. It was a rusty color but I got it all cleaned up.

My chain tension block was very worn and I figured it was so ordered one before hand.

Only issue that threw me for a loop is that all those that have already done this show removing the c-clip from the clutch rod (button) from the old throwout bearing and moving it over to the new pressure plate/bearing.
In my picture you can see the old throwout bearing on top with the orange arrow pointing at the "button". The Bandit instructions clearly show the removal of the c-clip in the illistration. My new Bandit pressure plate is on the left under the old throwout bearing.
Problem is my "button" clutch rod cup didn't have a c-clip holding it in. So, I tried to punch it out and it came out with a little resistance then I put it int he new pressure plate and tapped it in and it went in without a problem.
Since it taps in from the backside it won't go anywhere with the clutch rod pressing against it. Did get me wondering/worried that I wasn't doing something right though.

Here is the button re-installed in the new Bandit pressure plate

And this is the back side also showing the old and new clutch rod. You can see the wear on the old rod, it's more rounded off.

After it was all done I'm happy to report that my pressure plate and friction and steel discs were all within tolerances and could have gone a lot longer. No problems found other than a lot of gunk from friction debris and other stuff. Everything looked good. Now it's definitely ready for another 50,000 miles and I'm ready to go.
Breakin is 1000 to 5000 miles though! Guess it will be broken in after I get back from Sturgis.

good work Ray - how many shims did you use / what spring tension in the new setup?

As Jake stated in his "How To" I didn't use any for now. Very nice setup and almost to purdy to put in!

Thanks,

Ray, your carrier is the later (updated) carrier. Did you have any issues with the bearing fit in the carrier? I've seen a few where there was a loose fit between the carrier and the bearing.

DV, I though it looked like the old carrier with the vent holes being more square!
I tell ya, the only time that primary has been opened up was to put on the new primary nut during the recall a few years ago.
Everything was tight and clean inside though.

Just curious since you had to replace the tension shoe why you didn't put in the M6 hayden automatic tensioner? I guess I could see your point if you got that many miles though why mess with what works but its a nice unit that you don't have to keep adjusting.

I've seen that before and just forgot about it I guess. I've always been interested in it though.

M6 chain tensioner is designed to lighten your wallet, Tried em once when I worked for HD, regular maintenance is cheaper and does just as much good!

Very good post Raywood. Did notice that you have the scrape marks on the outer primary and still a non-broken carrier of the old style. Just good confirmation that some of the old ones do hold up fine and all the scarpes are not always from a carrier coming apart.

So far so good on my original also, but have given consideration to changing out to the Bandit. May hold out until the orginal starts showing issues which so far has not.

Enjoy the Sturgis run and make sure to get plenty of pictures.

Thanks FS, I was wondering about the rubbing marks on the inner primary but there is no evidense of rubbing on the back of the carrier! :loony: To my knowledge the clutch has never been messed with by the dealer or me.
Wondering if they are just factory clearance grindings prior to putting the bikes together?

Ray... great pics. I wish I would have known... I still have my stock chain adjustor that I could have gotten to you. I'm sure you will like that setup over the diaphram spring setup.

Thanks Gas, I've got it all together now just waiting for rain to subside then put a bunch of miles on it tomorrow to make sure all is well before I leave Thursday morning.

It's a good looking clutch and almost hated to close it up and fill with oil! :whoop:

Had a problem finding someone to press out the hub and install it in the new carrier over the weekend but got it done by my local auto shop yesterday.
Put it all together and let it set over night with all the loctite.

Stack height was in specs so put the pressure plate on and installed the springs.
Figured that I would use a shim in each spring since I was carrying a full load. The package comes with 20 large shims and 4 smaller ones for a wide range of pressures.
Buttoned it all up and adjusted the clutch rod then the cable and tried the clutch handle. Boy it was tough so pulled the shim and it's about what I had before. I also cleaned and re-greased the ball and ramp assembly.

All ready for another 50,000 miles or more! :D

You won't regret getting the Bandit Bruiser Clutch set-up guys.

Hey Raywood, keep an eye on that new Carrier. With those scuff marks on your inner primary, that new carrier is going to rub also, mine is. It wasn't the carrier itself rubbing, it was the bolt heads on the back side of the carrier. Baker is using too tall of a head on the bolts, or they are in need of a complete shim in the front and rear pully to move it all out a bit. It is all due the the input shaft flexing and the bolt heads on the carrier scuffing the inner primary when under power. That is why it only scuffs on the front edge because it is pulling forward on the input shaft.

Only problem with shimming it out to allow more clearance is that it will put added stress on that already flexing input shaft.

Thanks Jake, I will pull the cover off again now that I'm back from Sturgis. Want to change the oil and re-check tightness on the clutch nut. Will check for any wear and report back.

I just talked to Bandit and they are NOT recommending the use of Amsoil with the Bandit Clutch??? I like to use synthetic's like Mobil 1 in the engine, Redline in the trans, not sure what to use in the primary...HELP!
