Speedometer replacement

I have a couple of questions. I have a 2005 Pit Bull that was wrecked when I bought it. I called up a dealer to order a dash and speedometer assembly, because mine were missing when I bought the bike.

They called and told me I had to send them my ECM/black box, so they could send it to Big Dog, so they could get a reading out of it before they could send me a new speedo. Is that what you have to do to get a new speedo?

My bike's title already says 'True Miles Unknown' so I am not trying to cheat on the mileage or anything, I just want to ride sometime this year if I can.

So my questions are:

1. Do I actually need to send my black box to Big Dog?

2. Is there an aftermarket speedometer that fits into the stock dash that I can buy, if so, what brand or part number?

Sorry for the long post, but my dealer's communication hasn't been the best in regards to my questions.

I would take the title up there and say fax it to them if they need documentation.

If you don't care about the miles due to the title the way it is, neither should they.

I believe the EHC records mileage-and normally I think BDM wants the mileage off the EHC/old speedo to enable them to program your new speedo...that way it will have correct odometer mileage when you receive it to match your "old" odometer reading. (At least this this was what I was told some time ago). Contact BDM directly-and explain the situation about the title. Ask them if you fax them a copy of the title and agree to send a supplemental letter stating the mileage on the bike was unknown when purchased-as indicated by the title if they will send you a speedo. They are trying to remove any liability from themselves by inadvertently helping you basically "roll-back" mileage (hate to say it-but I think they are correct in this instance). Your other option is as indicated-buy a replacement speedo such as offered by Dakota Digital. Hope this works out to your satisfaction!

If your looking to just put a speedo on the bike and dont care about miles, check Ebay out there is always that stuff on there... I wish there was a classified page on this site so we could take care of all the BD brothers with parts issues before the dealer gets to there pockets...

The thing is the milage isn't set in the EHC or the tunderheart ignition. Its only set in the speedo itself. So they are either stupid or just plain assholes.

That is what we thought. I was going to call another dealer and see what they say.

As for trying to 'roll the miles', the title already state 'true miles unknown' and that can't be removed. At one point they said a signed mileage statement would be fine, but now they won't accept that.

The dakota digital is out of stock until September sometime right now.
